Raving About Rihanna: New Fenty Beauty Line Celebrates Women of All Shades

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

At exactly midnight on September 8th, Rihanna dropped a line of cosmetics that stunned the nation. Women rushed to their computers – credit card in one hand, mouse in the other – to purchase Fenty Beauty. Fenty Beauty, titled after Rihanna’s last name (cute, right?), consists of a wide range of beauty products and tools: foundation, primer, highlighter, contour/concealer (titled Match Stix), brushes, and lip gloss. Even wider is the range of shades offered for each product, with 40 shades of foundation and 30 shades of Match Stix, it’s no surprise that Rihanna put an immense amount of care and consideration into her beauty line.

Fenty Beauty is being recognized for its shade inclusivity. In addition to the aforementioned 40 shades of foundation and 30 shades of Match Stix, beauty enthusiasts can choose from 6 different highlighters. Alisson Sealy, a sophomore here at The Florida State University, owns a Fenty lip gloss and one of the highlighter shades called Trophy Wife and LOVES them, “I love both products! Trophy Wife stands out from the mainstream highlighters because it sparkles at any time of day, as if it were real gold. The lip gloss is unique in that it looks different on every person. It smells delicious, isn’t sticky and lasts long. I can’t wait to try the rest of the line!”

Multiple beauty gurus and YouTubers who have tried Fenty Beauty products are also raving about the line. Many of them purchased the entire line to give a full review of every product in their videos.

YouTubers of all shades have been singing praises about Fenty Beauty. Many have said that they love the foundation’s coverage and the way that it perfectly matches a variety of skin tones, “I love, love, love the foundation. I think it is really great coverage . . . really, really impressed me. It is really matte. And I’m oily, so that’s good for me,” -NitraaB (Video Here). And also, “I think the coverage is beautiful. I didn’t even use all of the pumps that I poured onto my hand. I’m very happy with the coverage.” – Jackie Aina (Video Here)

Others praise the highlighters:

“The highlighters are pretty good! . . . These definitely do it [highlighting] justice. I think the star of the show is Trophy Wife. Rihanna wore it to the show last night. I wore it all over my cheeks on Snapchat, it is beautiful.” – Jeffree Star (Video Here)

“I love my highlight . . . it’s amazing when you try something new and you are caught by surprise, because I was not expecting to love this product this much.” – Ms Deb Deb (Video Here)

The single rosy-nude lip gloss, called the “gloss bomb,” received an abundance of praise as well:

“This has a very pleasant smell to it and it isn’t sticky, which is very important for the glosses for me . . . It’s very thick, but not sticky, which is great.” – Nikki Perkins (Video Here)

YouTubers raved when they reviewed the Match Stix:

“Now that is a CONTOUR, baby! I do really, really like the tone of it. It’s not too cool, it’s not too warm . . . I really like this tone!”- NikkiTutorials (Video Here)

“It gave me a very beautiful contour. I really liked it a lot, especially in photos!”- Alissa Ashley (Video Here)

All of the Fenty Beauty products are catered to four specific skin tone groups: light, medium, tan and deep that include almost all possible skin tones on the spectrum. This impressively large range of shades ensures that all women can look and feel beautiful regardless of their pigmentation, or lack thereof. The home page of the Fenty Beauty Website features a statement by Rihanna which further demonstrates her dedication to inclusivity of all people, “Fenty Beauty was created for everyone: For women of all shades, personalities, attitudes, cultures, and races. I wanted everyone to feel included. That’s the real reason I made this line.”

As an added plus, the Fenty Beauty cosmetics are cruelty-free – no animals were tested on or harmed throughout the development of this line. Since Fenty Beauty took the world by storm, other makeup companies such as Kylie Cosmetics and Estee Lauder have released darker shades of their products. Women of all shades and backgrounds are encouraged to visit the line’s website or Sephora to experience the unmatched celebration, representation, and inclusion of women that is Fenty Beauty.
