SURPRISE! It’s Thanksgiving week! A time to celebrate life with family and friends while eating delicious foods. As most of us know, Thanksgiving was founded in 1621 to celebrate a great harvest of food between the English colonists (pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people. Today, Americans continue to celebrate the now-national holiday with loved ones to enjoy a great feast and to be reminded of all they are grateful and thankful for. As for me, I can personally say that Thanksgiving is definitely one of my favorite holidays. Mostly because I get to reconnect with family, but also because of the traditional food options that are always on the table during this time of year. However, this year will be a little different for me, as I will rate my family’s (and probably yours as well) most customary dishes for y’all to enjoy.

1. Cranberry Sauce

Starting off hot with what I believe to be a crucial Thanksgiving side dish, cranberry sauce. This delectable creation of sweet and sour mixed into one is the perfect component to balance out one’s pallet. It’s honestly the best option after a whole mouthful of stuffing and biscuits. I give cranberry sauce an 8.5/10 because it’s delicious, but doesn’t last long and is a side option.

2. Stuffing

Talking about a mouthful of stuffing, let’s move on to this side dish next. For me, when I was younger, I used to hate stuffing. It was definitely not an option for me at eight years old. However, now that I have matured and have learned from my mistakes, I can boldly say that stuffing is one of my top side options and will be on my plate once or twice this year. I give stuffing a 7/10 because it’s a solid side dish but dries your mouth out a little (unless you add gravy) and fills you up quickly. I would suggest eating your favorite foods before reaching for the stuffing.

3. Green Bean Casserole

Yeah, I don’t like this dish at all so Imma keep it short and sweet by suggesting you maybe just cook some asparagus or just green beans on the side? Sh*t, I’d rather eat Brussel sprouts than green bean casserole. Seriously, and this is towards my family, stop making this. We know no one eats it. I give green bean casserole a 2/10 because someone is gonna waste their time and effort to make it for maybe one person to enjoy, so that should count for two points.

4. Stuffed Shells

Now, stuffed shells might not be on your table, but it’s definitely on mine. Stuffed shells are like that food you try once and never forget. For further explanation, they’re basically a medium-sized noodle shell filled with ricotta cheese and spaghetti sauce. It’s pretty good and my brother loves them. I’ll give stuffed shells an 8/10 due to them being good for any time of the year and because my brother really enjoys them, so good for him.

5. Corn bake

Imma keep it short and sweet because that’s kind of what corn bake is like. . .maybe? I don’t know, either way, this is my absolute favorite side dish! I can eat like seven of them. I’ll give corn bake a 10/10 because it’s so perfect.

6. Turkey

To finish off this incredibly honest list, let’s end with the most important aspect of the entire dinner. . . TURKEY! My father usually fries the turkey, which of course is delicious, so for fried turkeys, I give a 10/10 rating. However, for baked turkeys, I’ll give a 6/10 because I’ve never tried it before and it might be good, but as the true American I am, fried is probably better.

Honorable Mention:

Cheese Ball

The best appetizer that my mother and family can ever make. It’s literally a ball of a bunch of different cheeses with sunflower seeds and other seasonings sprinkled on top and served with crackers on the side. I give this appetizer a 20/10 because it’s absolutely perfect to snack on while cooking, watching the Macy’s Day Parade or anything really.
