Puppies, Cupcakes and Kids: Harry Styles Released the ‘Kiwi’ Music Video and We’re Loving It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Hit after hit, Harry Styles has been pumping out singles from his debut album, and “Kiwi” is the latest of them. Harry, known for his extravagant styles and fun stage-persona, brings all that and more to the “Kiwi” music video. While the video is cute, and basically Dunkirk 2.0 with pastries and children, the song has absolutely no connection to it. The lyrics describe a pregnant woman who lives on the wild side, is having Harry Styles’s baby and says that it’s none of his business. I know, I still don’t get it.

We’d been anticipating the video for a while, and he gave us teasers on his Instagram before the debut of “Kiwi” on Nov. 8.

First, he gave us a class photo of all the children in the “Kiwi” video and it confused everyone. Why were they covered in food? Why did they all look like school children from the 60s? Why were some of them wearing Gucci suits? Why was Harry twinning with the kid in the middle?

Then, the next day came Beau; a little girl who could have easily passed as Harry Styles’s Doppelganger before he chopped off his locks. Adorned in the blue Gucci suit we saw in the first picture, Beau confirmed that she’d be playing Styles’s mini-me in the “Kiwi” video.

Darmani was introduced after, and his floral, yellow suit stood out amongst the children behind him. Darmani would end up becoming one of my favorite characters in the video.

Then, after the short, but torturous wait, Harry released the “Kiwi” video! It started off with Beau walking down the hallway with a Tupperware full of cupcakes that just so happened to match her suit. Her poise and grace down that catwalk could land her in America’s Next Top Model’s next season.

We’re then taken into an auditorium where there are a bunch of serious-looking little kids standing around looking at each other, ready to throw some cupcakes. Arguing ensues and Beau walks in dramatically, having a standoff with a little boy on the other side of the massive pile of baked goods in the center of the room.

The food fight begins and the first blow comes at Dormani when a cupcake falls at his feet, ruining his very expensive-looking shoes. His reaction, extremely justified and appropriate for the type of food they’re throwing, is “What the fudge?”

It’s total chaos, cupcakes, and icing flying high from both sides. A girl uses brown icing as face paint. One little dude decides to enjoy his cupcake and eat it instead of letting it go to waste (smart).

Beau runs out of cupcakes and makes a run to the pile. When she comes army-crawling out, the door opens and we see Mr. Harry Styles with a puppy in-arm. We have absolutely no context to who he’s supposed to be in all this. A teacher? The principal? A parent who was picking up their student from after-school care?

After witnessing the situation at hand, Styles releases his puppy-soldiers off into the war.

If you’ve ever seen Harry Styles perform “Kiwi” live, you’d know that he gets a little buck-wild, and that’s very much reflected in this video.

The food fight continues and Styles ends up hidden behind chairs, handing a girl a cupcake as he protects the dog in front of him. She bites off a piece and throws it like it’s a grenade.

The next scene shows a fallen soldier, hit by one too many cupcakes, while his friend cries over him.

The video ends with all of the kids in a separate room, looking like they’re ready for class picture day completely covered in food. Every parent’s worst nightmare.

The small smirk on Styles’s face at the very end not only made my heart palpitate but also gave this knowing look. He’s had this reputation put on him as this player in the media and this song took that and ran with it. He probably knew what people expected the “Kiwi” video to be and went completely against that. The video is meant to throw you off with little puppies and cute kids and I, for one, am fully here for it.

Go watch the whole video, here!
