Opportunities for Academic Success with Skylar Haynie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

College is difficult. It pushes you to explore parts of your body and mind that perhaps you wouldn’t have necessarily seen otherwise. Working, partying, interning or even joining clubs forces you to manage your time and might even limit your focus on school.

If you find yourself unable to juggle one or more of these avenues along with the demands of rigorous college curriculums, especially at a major party school like Florida State, you aren’t alone. Skylar Haynie discusses the opportunities and platforms available to students who need additional help.

Her Campus (HC): So, Skylar, what exactly are the opportunities and subjects that you market to students under your recent internship?

Skylar Haynie (SH): I am a Marketing Intern for FSU’s Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), so my main role is to create media for the Center. So far, I have been promoting informative workshops and tutoring sessions that we have coming up. We also have creative study rooms that allow students of all majors and interests to focus and create together. I have also been currently working on promoting the Proactive Referral and Engagement (PRE) program, which aims to help students early in the semester. This way, they have time to improve their performance before any major exams.

HC: That sounds awesome! How can FSU students access these opportunities and get involved?

SK: These sessions and study rooms are available to students via Campus Connect, where they can schedule and reserve time with a tutor or in an independent or group study space. The site was recently updated so students just need to login in with their FSU information and click the large blue button that says ‘Schedule Advising or Tutoring or Study Room.’ When you click the button, you then just need to fill out the necessary information for your interests and show up!

HC: Okay, that sounds very easy. Can you elaborate on any difficulties either you or other students have faced while in college?

SK: It is challenging sometimes to have an internship while being a full-time Honors student, as well as trying to balance a social life. I have found that properly managing your time is the most helpful thing to do to combat these challenges. I know that this is something that a lot of people struggle with though. If you are one of those people, you can schedule an appointment for one of ACE’s Study Skills tutoring sessions.

HC: Great! What are some other options on the other side of things, such as job opportunities as a tutor or intern?

SK: We’re currently hiring tutors for both Study Skills and course-based tutoring. If you go to our website and click ‘Become a Tutor,’ it should take you to see more information and the link to the application. From there, it is up to the leadership within the Center and your strengths and skills! I found the internship opportunity on Nole Network, which is also a resource we promote. So far, my experience has been really rewarding and supplemental for me, especially as a current student and Marketing major.
