Your Weekly Playlist: Daily Dose of Serotonin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Have you ever wished you had a playlist full of songs perfectly curated for an oddly specific feeling or a super niche scenario that feels almost unreal? You might even just want songs similar to a popular one you’ve heard before. Well, you’ve come to the right place!

This week’s playlist is called “Daily Dose of Serotonin,” a collection of songs that remind you of sundresses and heart-shaped sunglasses. When the weather is cold and sad, you need something to help you romanticize life.  These songs feel like carpool karaoke with your friends after a beach day and playing Just Dance in your cousin’s basement (in a good way). Wintertime makes everything blue, but these songs are all yellow. This playlist has a mix of techno-pop and some fun acoustics.

“I’m In Love With You” by The 1975

No song will ever give you a serotonin boost like this one. Matt Healy’s energy through his vocals alone is contagious, and the drums add chaos to the background that brings it all together. This song feels like jumping up and down and giddy happiness. I imagine all the girls Matt Healy kissed on tour know what I mean… not that I care of course.

“Lunar Eclipse” by Fulton Lee

Fulton Lee is pastel in every interpretation of the word. “Lunar Eclipse” is full of snazzy guitar riffs with a ‘70s rainbow aura. This is what I call a “rainbow song,” which means the song has the perfect balance of pink, yellow and blue; it’s upbeat, happy and mellow at the same time. Play this while you walk to class and watch the saturation of everything around you increase.

“Let’s Get Married” by Bleachers

“Let’s Get Married” is on Bleachers’ third (and slightly unhinged) album Gone Now. I present this to the court as further evidence that Jack Antonoff can do no wrong. Think of music videos where the girl is running down a field, her hair is flying everywhere, she does a spin, looks back smiling every once in a while and everything is in slo-mo — that’s this song. The scenario is very 2015 Tumblr, but so is this song, and somehow both work.

“Daft Pretty Boys” by Bad Suns

This song is a roller-skating rink. To be more specific, this song is a roller-skating rink in the ‘70s where the girls wore rainbow high socks, the boys wore short shorts and tried to race each other. The techno-pop mix of drums and electric guitar is a guaranteed win every time. I also apologize to everyone I recommended this song to and called it “Daft Punk Boys” by accident — an innocent mistake.

“Radio” by Dayglow

The dopamine rush this song gives me is unmatched. Dayglow’s 2022 album People in Motion is a burst of color in itself, full of bubbly synth drums and indie vocals. If you closed your eyes while listening to this song, you’d see different colored pastel bubbles filling up and popping like blowing bubbles when you’re a kid. Additional honorable mentions include: “Second Nature” and “Like She Does” off this same album.

“Root Beer Float” by Olivia O’Brien

If O’Brien had released this song earlier in 2016, it would’ve been a summer classic. The title itself describes the song so well, it makes you feel like driving back from the beach with your friends after spending the day burning in the sun, just to get root beer floats and drive home blasting music with the windows down. Blackbear is featured on this track and his notorious autotune vocals over the remixed pop beat is *chef’s kiss.*

“Home” by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

This is the absolute sweetest song I’ve ever heard. The folk beat and subtle country accents are so homey, you instantly fall in love. This song feels like being seven and watching your grandma pour honey into a cup of tea for you to drink because you were playing too long in the cold and you needed to get warmed up.

“Spring Theory” by PEABOD

PEABOD is currently my new favorite artist, he’s such a good mix of indie and rap. Although the beat has so many sick reverbs and remix spots, the lyrics are what earned it a spot on the playlist. “But if I’m honest right now, everything’s dreary, so I hold on to my spring theory” is my new vision board motto. The winter is so discouraging, but spring is already on its way, which means pretty flowers. We must persevere.

“Candy” by Robbie Williams

This song went viral on Tiktok a couple of years ago and everyone was obsessed with the 15-second audio but never paid much mind to the full song. I stumbled across the full version a week ago and it had to be included. I love songs about a character, usually a girl who is a total wild card and wreaks havoc around her. This song reminded me of one specific icon: Junie B. Jones. No further explanation is necessary.

“All My Love” by Noah Kahan

Only Noah Kahan knows exactly how to make an acoustic guitar sound cheery and energetic. This man had three months overdue rent, eight loans and a bank account in the negatives when he got in the studio to make Stick Season. His bills are paid now, let me tell you that. “She Calls Me Back” is also present on the recent album and is an honorable mention for the folk-like instrumental that hits just right.

If you need some happy songs to help you get through the winter blues or just a mini serotonin boost before your 8 a.m. class, this one is for you. Here’s the full playlist to complete your night!
