Why We All Need to Keep an Eye Out For Alana Haim

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

If you know anything about movies, you should be familiar with the powerhouse that is Paul Thomas Anderson. This November, he will release a brand-new movie called Licorice Pizza (the name is derived from a chain of LA record stores in the 1970s) starring Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman. This will be the first leading role for both actors and I thoroughly believe that it will launch them into stardom.

This will not be the first time that Alana Haim has been launched into the public eye. Apart from being an actress, she is a member of the pop-rock band Haim with her two sisters, Este and Danielle. While the band has been together since 2007 (and even longer than that if you count their family band, Rockinhaim), they only began to receive praise in 2012. Since then, they have released three studio albums—Days Are Gone, Something to Tell You, and Women in Music Pt. III—and have been nominated for three Grammys. They have also recently collaborated with Taylor Swift on the songs “No Body No Crime” and “Gasoline” (these are both staples in my Spotify listening history).

Alana, Danielle and Este are no strangers to Paul Thomas Anderson. They have been working with him on their music videos since 2017 when he directed their music video “Valentine.” Since then he has directed countless videos for them, such as “Summer Girl,” “Night So Long” and “Hallelujah.”

However, this is the first time that any of the sisters have appeared on the big screen. The movie will follow high schooler Gary Valentine as he falls in love with Alana Kane and sets out for San Fernando Valley. I think that this movie is going to be another coming-of-age staple for teens today. It pulls on the same heartstrings as Lady Bird and makes you feel somehow nostalgic for your teenage years, even if they were not the best.

I am personally so excited to see what will happen in the next few months as more promo comes out for Licorice Pizza. Haim has had a Twitter following ever since they started making music, but there has been an increasing number of tweets about Alana lately. This only convinces me further that she is going to break out into stardom after the movie releases on Nov. 26.

As far as celebrities go, I think she fits the perfect mold to be Twitter’s new favorite girl. Alana has claimed multiple times that her favorite movie is the 1995 classic The Goofy Movie. What’s more relatable than that?

So, if in late November, Twitter absolutely blows up about Alana Haim, I want it to be known that I already predicted it all. I cannot wait to see the movie when it comes out (in select theatres) and see Alana in her first starring role.
