Talloween is notorious. Even when I was in high school, I heard stories about Halloween in Tallahassee. So, when I got to Florida State University (FSU), October was on my mind. First, I had my costumes to worry about. FSU expectations are a lot: costumes have to be cute, sexy and not super basic. I got two costumes: Victoria’s Secret (VS) Angel and a hippie — it’s the best I could come up with on a college student budget.

The first night of my Talloween journey was Thursday when I took two of my friends to the Kappa Sigma party. It was fun! They had a DJ and everyone was having a good time while looking good. This was my friend’s first time in Tallahassee and I think it lived up to their expectations.

On Friday morning, we woke up and I had to take my friend to the Tire Kingdom because her tire came off on the ride up. After that, we waited for another friend to arrive and started making our plans for the night. We ended up at the pre-banding line at The Strip which was pretty long. After paying $20, we headed back home to start getting ready. This night was my VS Angel night, which I was so excited about, but it ended up not turning out the way I wanted it to. This just made me feel less confident which bled through to the rest of the night.

We got into The Strip and started dancing. Unfortunately, I was just not feeling it. I didn’t feel confident in myself or my costume and just felt like calling it a night. But, life goes on and I had to rally for my friends. So, we ended up having fun at the club and moved on to Kappa Alpha. We ultimately ended the night at DP Dough before walking home with cheap pizza.

In the two months that I’ve been here, I was lucky enough to meet my friend Gustavo, who was playing guitar at a house party on Saturday. We got ready and I ended up making a costume out of clothes that I own and was a mix between country and white trash. We drove to the party and it was interesting. It was the first “indie” party I had ever been to, but there was live music and it was honestly really fun. All of my friends from school and home were there, which was really nice. After my friend played his set, we ended up dancing a little more and leaving after a few hours.

On the way home, we received news that there was a shooting nearby and we were all a little spooked. We have all heard the rumors around Halloween in Tallahassee, or just Tallahassee in general, but it’s really scary when something like that happens when you’re two miles away. After receiving that news, we didn’t feel like celebrating anymore.

So that was the end of my first Halloween extravaganza in Tallahassee. It was amazing and fun, but very tiring. After the weekend, my room needed a deep clean and I needed a couple of days in bed.
