How To Enhance the Natural Waves in Your Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

If you have naturally wavy or curly hair but are struggling to enhance the natural pattern of your hair, this is for you.

For a long time, I thought my hair was wavy at random times, such as after showering and sleeping with wet hair. I always brushed out my waves, trying to straighten my hair out with a hairbrush or with a straightener. This would cause my hair to be frizzy and a combination of being moderately wavy and straight. I started to look into how I can enhance the natural pattern of my hair and I watched a lot of YouTube videos and read a lot about my hair type and how I can make my waves more prominent. If you struggle with the same issue, here’s my advice for you.

Avoid heat

Staying away from heat for a while can do your hair a lot of good. If you straighten or curl your hair or blow dry it every day, the heat can damage the proteins in your hair that makes it strong. Too much heat can result in brittle hair that loses its natural waves. I’d recommend letting your hair air dry instead of using heat for a few months.

Brush your hair while it’s wet

It’s important to brush your hair while you’re in the shower or right after you shower when your hair is still wet. If you wait until your hair is moist or dry, this will probably cause your hair to be frizzy and your waves will be brushed out and not noticeable.

leave-in conditioner

After showering, using a leave-in conditioner will help add moisture to your hair as well as detangle it. If you have frizzy or damaged hair, a leave-in conditioner can be extremely helpful to make your hair stronger and healthier. Ever since I’ve started to use a leave-in conditioner, I’ve noticed that the wavy pattern in my hair is much more noticeable and my hair is healthier.

Use a styling gel

After using a leave-in conditioner and brushing your hair when it’s still wet, bring out your waves with styling gel (which you can find for your specific hair type) by scrunching it into your hair and letting it air dry (no blow drying!). I use a frizz control styling gel, which helps with bringing out my waves without making my hair frizzy. I use about an almond-sized drop of styling gel and scrunch it into my hair when it’s wet.

apply hair oil

This one is optional, but I’d recommend it. Once your hair is dry, applying hair oil to the ends of your hair will protect it from damage and keep your hair healthy. This will also make your waves appear shinier and healthier! Different hair oils have many different benefits, such as peppermint oil improving hair growth, coconut or almond oil moisturizing hair and olive oil reducing hair breakage.

I hope these tips will help you develop your own hair routine to bring out the natural pattern of your hair instead of trying to brush it out or straighten it! I’ve started to really embrace my hair for its waviness ever since I started doing these steps. This routine made my waves much more noticeable and kept my hair healthy overall.
