Taylor Swift Wrote a Song for “Where the Crawdads Sing”

After months of silence from Taylor Swift, she has come back with an exciting announcement for her fans: she wrote an original song for the movie Where the Crawdads Sing. Expected to be released on July 15, the movie is an adaptation of the book with the same name written by Delia Owens. Reese Witherspoon is the producer of this movie, through her production company “Hello Sunshine” which has recently worked on shows such as Big Little Lies, Little Fires Everywhere and Daisy Jones & The Six.

Where the Crawdads Sing is Owen’s first novel and was released in 2018. The story focuses on Kya, a girl who is left to fend for herself in the marshes of North Carolina in the 1960s. Years later, she is a suspect in the murder of her boyfriend, Chase. Daisy Edgar-Jones, known for Normal People and Fresh, is playing Kya alongside Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson.

On March 22, Taylor Swift took to her social media to announce that she was writing a new song for the movie. Alongside the announcement that she was working on the movie, she posted the trailer which was released on the same day.

Currently, Taylor Swift is working on re-recording his first few studio albums, as an attempt to own her music after Scooter Braun sold her masters, which caused a massive uproar on social media over the past few years. Swift released Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in April of 2021 and Red (Taylor’s Version) in November of 2022. Since then, Swift has kept a relatively low profile on social media, which has made fans eager to find out what her next project may be. In fact, there have been many theories and speculation on what she is up to. However, Swift surprised everyone with her recent announcement.

In her Instagram caption, Taylor revealed that she was a fan of Where the Crawdads Sing. She also revealed that the song is called “Caroline” (a reference to the setting of the film) and was written independently by her. She also called upon Aaron Dessner, who produced a good amount of both of her albums Folklore and Evermore in 2020, to produce the song. This is not Swift’s first-time writing music for movies, as she has also worked on music for Cats (2019) and Hannah Montana the Movie (2009).

While it is still unclear when the entire song will be released, and if it may be released before the movie in July, fans can hear a short snippet of the song in the trailer that Swift posted. It seems to be a change from her usual music style—as it is much slower as opposed to her usually more pop and up-tempo music. There have also been rumors going around that the song is over seven minutes long; although, this has not been confirmed by Swift herself.

No matter what, fans everywhere are eagerly anticipating both the release of “Carolina” and Where the Crawdads Sing in the summer of 2022!
