Unless you have been MIA on all social media platforms, you know who Harry Styles is, how his career started and where it’s going. In case you don’t, let me break it down for you in the simplest way possible.
Harry Styles auditioned for the X-Factor UK when he was just 16 years old, back in 2010. Simon Cowell’s idea to start a boy band resulted in Harry Styles being 1/5th of the most popular boy band in the world— One Direction. In Aug. 2015, the band announced a hiatus that marked the end of their time together. Since then, the band members have started their solo careers, and Harry Styles released three solo albums and went on sold-out tours. His post-boy band phase did not stop there when Styles made his acting debut in the 2017 Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk. Although his part is not deemed to be a “main character,” his appearance in the movie caused quite the conversation, and not just among his fans. Fast-forward to 2022, Olivia Wilde’s film Don’t Worry Darling featured Styles as the main character, which elevated his career as an actor and allowed him to be taken more seriously in the industry, especially after attending the Venice Film Festival in early September of this year. Although he was working on this project for quite some time, Styles did not take a hiatus from his music career and released his third album Harry’s House the same year the film was released.
The next step in the singer’s acting career is coming on Oct. 21, when the world will be able to see him as Tom Burgess in Michael Grandage’s film My Policeman. Following his main performance in Don’t Worry Darling, Styles’ character appears to be an important one, if not the center of the film. The movie takes place in 1950s Britain, where Tom Burgess falls in love with a teacher from Brighton. The big talk of the movie is centered around the plot of Tom having an affair with a man who is a museum curator, not caring about the illegality of homosexuality at that time.
Styles expressed how much being part of this film affected him and how much it means to him to be part of such a story. He claimed that the story focuses on “wasted time” and that it is quite “devastating” because we have no control over it, and it is “the one thing we can’t have back.” He also pointed out that this film does portray real-life sexuality, especially when his character Tom is struggling emotionally to “find himself.” The film has a time jump from the 1950s to 1999, which Styles also pointed out that is one of the reasons the film works so well, since the degree of acceptance between both time frames differs immensely.
This film made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, to which the CEO Cameron Bailey said that this movie “shifts through time and across fluid boundaries of love and desire,” and that the cast embodied the story and the obstacles that came with it beautifully.
My Policeman will be available in theatres starting Oct. 21st, and on Prime Video on Nov. 4th. Even if you are not a fan of Harry Styles himself, this movie has had an emotional impact even before its release and it appears to be an appealing subject for many, with a very relevant and crucial message behind it.
