Is Doja Cat Really Quitting Music?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Singer and rapper Doja Cat (full name Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini) has announced the end of her career.

This all began after Paraguay’s Asunciónico Festival had to be canceled for the safety of everyone due to extreme flooding. Other artists such as Machine Gun Kelly decided to give the Paraguayan fans a smaller and more personal performance outside their hotels. Some artists did not even make it to Paraguay, but they still decided to send their regards to their fans. Miley Cyrus decided to tweet a video dedicated to those fans who were unable to experience the show.

Doja Cat’s fans were quick to tweet her and express their disappointment and distress after she apologized to her Brazilian fans for not performing as well as she could but kept her silence after the Paraguay cancelation. The singer then said on Twitter that she is “not sorry” after the account @metamorsophie on Twitter posted a photo that labeled Doja Cat as the “PUBLIC ENEMY #1”.

According to the Los Angeles Times, there were a series of tweets that were deleted both from the singer and her fans. Alongside the group of upset fans, there were also supporters who “accused other fans of putting unfair expectations on Doja.”

E! News is one of the various news sources that reaches out to Doja’s team for comments, but they did not hear back. Billboard mentioned that since this huge Twitter exchange between Doja and the public began, she has now “vowed to stop taking photos with fans” and besides her own disappointment with her performance in Brazil, she has also “exchanged terse words with NBC Sports/ Telemundo Sports production assistant Roberto Rojas.”

Many speculated that Doja Cat was under pressure and acted out of emotion, but she demonstrated her seriousness when she replied “yes the f*** I am” to a tweet that read “Ok so maybe @DojaCat isn’t retiring”. The singer has made it clear that even though she plans on continuing the end of her career, she will uphold with any show that is already planned. Glenn Rowley from Billboard wrote that Doja “already slated to once again headline Lollapalooza Brazil during the festival’s second weekend this coming Friday (April 1)”. She also publicly announced today that she is not planning on bailing on The Weeknd’s After Hours Tour, which she will join for some shows. In a since-deleted tweet, she claims she “ain’t gone yet,” and will finish the videos she has to film, shows she already committed to, and content that is already planned and set to be released. There have been multiple people tweeting their sadness, support and opinions regarding the singer’s desire to leave her career. In the midst of all of this, Doja kept her word and continued to post content on Instagram, such as her recent Vogue Singapore shoot.

As of Friday, April 1, the last word and update from Doja Cat regarding this situation was a post on her Instagram stories quoting American musician Frank Zappa that said, “Even if you don’t like or understand what the record is, the person who is in the executive chair may not be the final arbiter of taste for the entire population.”
