Since Donald Glover revealed the title and artwork for his upcoming album, “Awaken, My Love!” on Twitter last Wednesday night, Childish Gambino fans everywhere have been preparing themselves for yet another musical masterpiece. It’s been three years since his last album, “Because The Internet,” was released for his fans to analyze, along with an entire screenplay written by Glover himself to go along with it. Since “Because The Internet” was released, Glover has kept himself and his fans busy with the release of his last mixtape in 2014, “STN MTN / Kauai,” as well as the release of his television show on FX this year, “Atlanta,” which he both created and starred in. Regardless of all that he’s already given us, I think it’s safe to say that we’re ready to dissect yet another aspect of the genius that is Donald Glover’s mind.
In addition to the album artwork and title, Glover released the first single off the album, “Me and Your Mama,” on his social media accounts for the world to hear. This single is different than anything Gambino has released in the past, putting most of the focus on his underrated singing ability as opposed to his classic fast-paced rap skills. The single is refreshing to listen to, starting with a soothing instrumental at the beginning that slowly turns into soulful ballad by Gambino. It will definitely be played on repeat for the next week, as to truly capture its unique sound. I am curious to see if the whole album will follow suit, focusing mainly on Gambino’s singing voice, or if it will be accompanied by rapping as well.
