Premiering Thursday, Sep. 26 is NBC’s new comedy Sunnyside. Following the story of Garret Modi, a Queens resident who was elected the youngest New York City councilman ever, his electric political career dwindles as he gets caught in a scandal. Carried away by the glitz and glam of political power, he is blinded by his own ego and fails to represent the communities that elected him in the first place. After a drunken mistake caught on camera, Garret is left to wallow in the shame and glum that comes with losing his career. Transitioning from living lavishly to moving in with his sister Mallory, Garret is left to reflect on his past mistakes and how he stupidly lost all that he worked hard for. After an extended pity party and aimlessly looking for a chance to regain his purpose, Garret is confronted by a diverse group of immigrants who believe that with his help, they can achieve their dreams of becoming U.S citizens. Viewing this as a chance for redemption and to pursue a new purpose, Garret agrees to help them study for their citizenship test.

The diverse group of immigrants includes a Dominican, an Ethiopian, two Asians (who joke about not being able to disclose their country of origin) and a Moldovan. With their vibrant personalities and various qualities that upon first glance may seem to clash, the environment they create and share with one another is comical beyond compare. As a Dominican myself, I am beyond excited to watch this show, as I very rarely ever get to witness someone of my background as a leading character who doesn’t succumb to the negative stereotypes the Latinx community is usually plagued with. In recent interviews, cast members have shared their overwhelming excitement for what’s to come this season, joyous and eager to finally see all of their hard work presented to America.
Sunnyside aims to bring people together for a laugh and for audiences to see themselves in characters that anyone can relate to. You can catch this hilarious comedy on NBC airing Thursdays at 9:30/8:30c starting Sep. 26. Don’t forget to check out the trailer!
