Curly hair is a full-time job, and anyone who has it definitely understands that. It takes time to learn what methods and products work best for your hair. From figuring out what your curl pattern is to picking what leave-in conditioner is best, it is all a learning process. I haven’t perfected my hair routine just yet, but I do have some products that I know I can always count on.

Maui Moisture Curl Quench + Coconut Oil Shampoo and Conditioner is the mixture I currently use to wash my hair. This combo is made for thick, curly hair and it’s supposed to hydrate, smooth, and defrizz the hair. I quickly lean towards products that smell good, so it’s no surprise that this coconut smelling concoction caught my attention. Not only does it smell great, but it is also sulfate-free!  Sulfates tend to strip the hair of its natural oils, so it’s always best to steer clear from products that have any.  These products moisturize my hair and leave it feeling light and healthy.

Because I don’t currently use a leave-in conditioner for my hair, I use the Mielle Organics Avocado Moisturizing Hair Milk.  This acts as a moisturizer for my hair while also repairing dryness.  At first glance, avocado doesn’t seem like the most desirable thing to put on your hair.  However, the scent is very subtle and isn’t overpowering. Trust me, it works!  I like this product because it isn’t extremely thick, and I can smoothly lather it throughout my hair without a problem.

I can go on and on about how much I love Miss Jessie’s Pillow Soft Curls cream! I use this as a styling product, meaning it helps create the curls.  Way back when, I used to put insane amounts of mousse in my hair to get curls to form, but they would always come out “crunchy.” This product forms the curls, minus the crunch (YAY).  It leaves my hair feeling soft and very pillow-like.  The only slight downside to this product is that it’s definitely pricey.  My tip: buy it from retailers like Walmart or Target on sale.

To lock in my curls, I always like to use a gel product. One that I’ve recently started using is the Camille Rose Curl Maker. This is a sweet defining jelly with smoothing marshmallow and agave extracts. I have a loose curl pattern, which makes my curls a little harder to stay. This product really does a nice job of holding the curls in place without feeling gummy, like most hair gels. A little goes a long way with this curl maker, which helps me cope with the pain of how expensive it is.

I switch up about every product in my hair routine because I personally like experimenting with different things in my hair. This way, I’m able to see how my hair takes to different products and tools. So many websites offer tips on the importance of hair care and what is best for your hair.  There’s a lot of things to learn when it comes to caring for your curly hair, but with patience and excitement, you’ll get there!
