Meet Shannon Mitchell

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Major: Editing, Writing, and Media

Minor: Communications

Year: Senior

Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah

Relationship Status: Taken

Her Campus (HC): What are you involved with here on campus?

Shannon Mitchell (SM): Well, I’ve done a lot on campus throughout my FSU career. Currently, I am really involved with the Collegiate Veterans Association (CVA).

HC: Really? I heard that with the help from students, staff, and FSU Student Veterans Center Director, Billy Francis, FSU was named one of the top veteran-friendly colleges in the country. That’s a great achievement. In terms of CVA, what exactly do you guys do?

SM: Yes. It really is. CVA is an organization supported and run by student veterans. We work in relation to the Veteran Student Union, which happens to be new to FSU, and Students For America’s Military (S.A.M) FSU Chapter.

HC: Whoa. I had no idea we had so many military-related organizations on campus. How did you get so interested in participating in military-related things? Have you had any personal experience with the military in your family?

SM: No, not at all. It’s important to me to show support to our past, present, and future military because of how much they push their bodies to the limit, give up familiarities, and risk their lives for us just so that we can live in peace, safety, and freedom. The student veterans I work with are very special people; more than my friends, they have become my family on campus.

HC: That’s really awesome that you have such an appreciation for the ones that have served in the military. Do you have a motto or a quote you live by?

SM: I don’t really have one, but one thing I do live by is the example of Christ.

HC: Since you’re graduating this semester (congratulations by the way) what are your plans after graduation?

SM: My plan is to find a job *laughs.* I want to continue to work with the military as a civilian though as my dream career.

HC: What inspires you in life?

SM: I am inspired by success and using that to glorify God. I have a strong faith and am inspired by the Bible, God’s word. Success doesn’t necessarily mean money, but seeing God working in everything and trying to further His kingdom.

HC: I know this may seem random, but I love hearing people’s responses to this question. I also get very interesting responses that make me stop and think. So, if you were a fruit, what would you be?

SM: *Laughs.* Well, I would be a watermelon because I have a surface of shyness or perhaps “have my guard up,” but once broken through I’m really a sweetheart. Like every person, tainted with their baggage (past, hope, dreams, and beliefs) which are the seeds.

HC: Oh goodness. It’s like you’ve thought this through or had this question before. You even got deep with the representation of the seeds. This is definitely why I like asking this question.

I'm a senior at Florida State University who loves her Seminoles (GO NOLES!), reading, and ,of course, writing while drinking a hot cup of Twining's Spiced Apple Chai and listening to classical music.
