Meet Perla Diaz: Psychology Major With An Artistic Eye

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Name: Perla Diaz

Year in school: Junior

Major: Psychology

Minor: Entrepreneurship

Her Campus (HC): What is your favorite thing about FSU?

Perla Diaz (PD): The school spirit and the overall vibe of being united.

HC: Are you single or taken?

PD: It’s complicated.

HC: What are your interests outside of school?

PD: My sister and I have a bikini line together. It is called byounique. I style and she crotchets and this is our second summer working with byounique.

HC: Where is your favorite place to buy clothes?

PD: I usually do a mixture of online shopping and thrift stores. I do not like to wear one brand too much; I appreciate a more eclectic wardrobe. I usually buy bigger t-shirts and cut them myself. My fashion choices are definitely not generic — I have a diverse street style.

HC: Who is your celebrity guy crush?

PD:  I always thought Jesse Metcalfe was cute (John Tucker from John Tucker Must Die), but then I saw a picture of the present day John Tucker holding a baby and thought he was even cuter. He looks more grown up.

Check out the photo here.

HC: Who is your celebrity girl crush?

PD: Gypsy One. She is a traveling photographer and model from Hawaii. I like her because she is not your typical model — she’s 5’0 and has tattoos. She just goes against the rules.

HC: What are three things you look for in a boyfriend?

PD: Someone who is passionate about something. He has to be a gentlemen too, not egotistical. I also like creative people of any kind — musicians, writers, artists, photographers.

HC: What do you think “art” is?

PD: Art is someone who takes their daily inspirations and puts them in another media.

HC: I know no one dates anymore, but what would be your ideal date?

PD: Dates are not a big deal to me. I just want the person I am with to be genuine. They do not have to be rich or flashy. A date does not have to be all about “things,” but rather what the person likes to do and how they interact with me. I really love when someone can show me their true self. No bullsh*t. I want to know their interests and they cannot be afraid of their flaws.

HC: What is the best pick-up line anyone has ever used on you?

PD: A couple weeks ago a guy came up to me and told me he could feel my energy from across the bar. I thought it was really cool. That is not a compliment or a pick-up line that you hear every day.

HC: How would you want a guy to come onto you?

PD: A little while ago, I was putting a bumper sticker on my car and a guy came up to me and told me I was beautiful and that he wanted to know my name. That is a better compliment than being called “sexy” or “hot.” Usually, I like being friends with guys first because aggressive guys are a turn off.

HC: What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

PD: During the day, I like to go out to the greenway and listen to music and be peaceful. I like to go out at night.

HC: Who is your favorite artist?

PD: The Weeknd is amazing. His latest album, “Kiss Land”, promotes a real spiritual connection to words and beats. I even got “XO”, which is his label and logo tattooed on me a few months after this album was released.

HC: What is your favorite food?

PD: I like exotic food. I like anything from Asian food, Thai, South American, and Peruvian. I also love curry. I appreciate authentic food — nothing greasy. I usually stay away from Italian food.

HC: How do you feel about health food?

PD: I absolutely love healthy food. I want to stay true to nature and support local farmers. I like food producers that put their emphasis on quality, not quantity. I do not eat food that has GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) and a lot of these ingredients in our “Frankenfood” are outlawed in many other countries and are linked to cancer.

HC: What are some of your favorite foods from the health food store?

PD: Sometimes it is hard to always have fresh food. I may not have the time to eat it before it goes bad. So, I usually gravitate to the frozen section and get things like black bean burgers. New Leaf Market has a nice array of frozen food.

HC: Do you work out?

PD: Yes, I work out three times a week. I do three miles of cardio and tone. I do not use barbells; I just do simple lifting and push-ups.

HC: What are your future aspirations?

PD: That is a difficult question. I am a psychology major, but I do not necessarily want to use my major to mold my future career decisions. If anything, psychology has expanded my artistic eye because I can read people very well. I want to be in a creative field because I have an eye for trends and I know what people want to see. I could never have an office job — I don’t want any rules.

HC: Where do you want to move after college?

PD: Los Angeles, California. I want to expand me and my sister’s bikini line. I also really love to draw and want to get involved in screen printing. I feel like L.A. is the perfect city for creativity.
