Her Campus (HC): So James, what are you involved with here at Florida State?
James Brown (JB): I joined Alpha Epsilon Delta, the pre-health honor society, this past year and just got elected to the executive board. I’m a member of Tri-Beta, the biological honor society here at FSU as well. I also just got a job working in the microbiology lab and a research position with a graduate student in Dr. Travis’ lab studying ecology and evolution.
HC: Sounds like you have alot going on! What do you like to do when you have a bit of spare time?
JB: In my free time I volunteer with Big Bend Hospice and I like to spend time with friends when I’m not busy studying.
HC: Describe your ideal future!
JB: I’m some type of doctor (I’m not entirely sure which specialty yet), living up north somewhere near Boston with a wife, two kids, and a dog.
HC: What was it exactly that made you want to pursue a career in medicine?
JB: I’ve always been interested in the human body and its functions as well as science in general. In high school, I had some volunteer experience where I got a chance to really help people and it was so satisfying. I figured becoming a doctor would be the perfect career path to meet both of those criterias.
HC: What advice would you give to other undergrad pre-med students or incoming freshmen?
JB: Get involved as soon as possible! I wasn’t involved with any organizations my freshman year and I definitely regret it. Although I did very well for myself this year to obtain all of these different positions (the executive board of AED and the research position), I definitely would have had a head start if I had gotten involved sooner.
HC: What do you love the most about being a Florida State student?
JB: The sense of community! It’s so great to be an FSU student and experience all the football games and tailgates. It’s amazing to have these incredible professors and awesome opportunities, but when you can relax and have some fun, Tallahassee knows how to come together and have a good time.
HC: Most memorable moment of your time spent at FSU so far?
JB: The lecture given by Neil DeGrasse Tyson was amazing! It was definitely one to remember. He was so inspiring and made me want to work even harder to achieve my goals.
HC: Favorite restaurant in Tallahassee?
JB: My favorite restaurant is Mr. Roboto’s. It’s so amazing. That’s one thing I will definitely miss about Tallahassee when I inevitably leave.
HC: Lastly, what are three words that describe yourself?
JB: Driven, funny, and British.
