Living With Three Guy Roommates: Is It the Nightmare You Picture?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

When I binge-watched New Girl two years ago I never imagined I would one day find myself in Jess’s place. For those of you who haven’t seen this iconic show, it tells the trials and tribulations of a group of friends all living in a loft together, three guys and one girl, Jess. This is currently my living situation! I live with two of my best friends from high school and a friend I met in college. Living with three guys definitely has its pros and cons and I’m here to dish them out.

Before you live with three guys, you should picture yourself living with your brother in college. This is exactly what it’s like. If you have siblings back home and don’t miss the times of teasing, living with guy roommates may not be for you. Day in and day out I am mocked for my clumsiness, paranoia of being murdered and fear of roaches. To be fair, the teasing goes both ways, which can prove to be entertaining. We constantly prank each other by scaring each other and hiding each other’s things. Therefore, it’s never boring at the house.

On the other hand, living with guys is just as messy as you would imagine it. I’m pretty sure that, in the past two months of living at the house, I have been the only one to mop and vacuum the common area. This can get pretty annoying. However, if you give them a good yell, my roommates tend to cooperate (or if you bribe them with food). I also currently share a bathroom with two of them, which I would not recommend. Thankfully more bathrooms are being built for us because, if they weren’t, you would see me losing it. I don’t know about other guys, but my roommates never put the toilet seat back down which just makes the bathroom look ugly overall. Not to mention their tendency to let the trash can in the bathroom to overflow (another task I constantly find myself doing) is extremely aggravating.

Not everything is frustrating though. I will always be happy that they take out the trash, a chore I absolutely loathe—especially when I’m paranoid about roaches. It’s also nice to feel like you have someone to have your back. I have screamed bloody murder plenty of times and someone always comes to check on me and make sure I’m not getting murdered. Another plus is having someone to watch you and make you feel secure while walking your dog late at night. It’s definitely a benefit that I can get the inside scoop on what’s going on in a guy’s head and can get advice on any boy troubles from them.

So is living with three guys the nightmare you picture? It might not be, depending on whether you’re willing to give up a few things like walking around in underwear and, occasionally, your peace of mind. It’s definitely an adventure. Although it can be frustrating when they don’t clean or refuse to give me outfit advice, it can still be pretty fun. My three roommates are like my brothers and they definitely make my life just a little more exciting. It might not be as exciting as Jess’s in New Girl, but it’s definitely a close second!
