My Guide to Learning to Crochet For Sweater Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

It’s fall, which means it’s time for all things comfy and cozy! Let’s bundle up in blankets, put on our favorite episode of Gilmore Girls, and get some hot apple cider brewing! While we’re at it, let me introduce you to one of my favorite hobbies and the perfect fall activity: crocheting.

Crocheting is an art that involves using a hook to make different textiles by interlocking different loops of yarn. I started my journey as a little girl knitting with my grandma. I would sit in my room crafting never-ending rectangles of scarves with each row getting a little neater. However, knitting never seemed to be my favorite activity. As the pandemic rolled around, I decided that I wanted to move away from knitting and learn how to crochet. Now, crocheting allows me to have an outlet into a stress-free and fun activity that rewards me with fun house décor and gifts for my friends. Let’s get into everything you need to know as a beginner!

Learning How to Crochet

The art of crochet may appear to be scary, but don’t let complicated patterns fool you! Once you have the basics down, you’re set to make anything. There are so many resources out there to help you get started.

FSU Crochet Society is a club on campus that promotes building community through the art and practice of crocheting. On their website, you can find guides to learn your first chain stitch, how to read crochet abbreviations, and how to figure out what hook size you need for your project. The club also plans events for all skill levels to come out and crochet together in an instructed setting. You can get involved with them by visiting their website or Instagram.

One of my favorite creators, Mahumcrochets, has a YouTube channel where she creates super cute patterns and posts step-by-step tutorials for them. The tutorials range from bags to book covers and even to stuffed animal designs. This is the perfect resource for making crocheted gifts for your friends!

My Crochet Must-Haves

Everyone crochets in different ways, but if you need suggestions for starting out, here are my go-tos! As you get more into crocheting, Michaels will become one of your favorite places. My favorite hooks to work with are the ones with a grip covering on them, like the Ergonomic Aluminum hook. They are really comfortable to work with, and I find that my hands don’t get as tired when I’m using them. As for yarn, I really enjoy working with the Loops and Threads yarn. If you’re looking for a versatile yarn, this is your best bet because it ranges in more than forty-five colors. Don’t forget to check their website for coupons on in-store and online purchases!

Making Perfect Handmade Gifts

Learning how to crochet means you can create some of the most meaningful gifts for your friends and family! Last year, I made a crocheted gift for all my family members. For Christmas, I crocheted my mom some flowers that will last forever using some pip cleaners for stems and a little vase I found at Goodwill. Some other gifts that I have made are book covers, tote bags, glass cases, coin purses, and tapestry art. Everyone loves handmade gifts, and by crocheting them, you can show your loved ones your newfound hobby!

Now that we have gone over all my tips and tricks, grab a hook, pull up your favorite pattern, and channel your inner grandma this fall with the art of crocheting!
