Fall is in full swing, and the annual Gilmore Girls rewatch has begun. The 2000s TV show has become synonymous with this time of year, and Lorelai and Rory Gilmore have come to grace our screens once again. Gilmore Girls is one of my comfort shows due to its witty dialogue, pop culture references that you don’t understand until the fifth watch, and the comforting community within the picturesque setting of Stars Hollow.
Although Rory Gilmore has her many faults, there are a handful of her qualities perfect to incorporate into your life this time of year. These five things are perfect ideas for enjoying the fall season Gilmore-style.
- Fall Fashion
-
As the weather in Tallahassee starts to get slightly colder, we can finally bring out our long-sleeve apparel. Rory has so many iconic looks and such a specific style that is both chic and cozy. She is known for patterned and knit sweaters, often accompanied by jeans or skirts, and Converse or boots. Her mother, Lorelei, enjoys wearing turtlenecks as well.
Monochrome brown outfits are popular throughout the show. Pairing this look with a leather jacket or oversized coat is sure to capture the fall spirit during colder temperatures. There are so many amazing looks you can create with the Rory Gilmore formula.
- Call Your Mom!
-
Gilmore Girls would not be the same without the close relationship between Rory and Lorelai. Their small age gap, along with their shared interests and humor, makes them attached at the hip. Although I have more than a 16-year age difference with my mom, I pride myself on our close relationship.
As school gets busier or your weeks become more hectic, it can be easy to neglect communication with your loved ones. A phone call in between classes or catching up over the weekend can do a lot to boost your mood. Calling your mom, or anyone important to you, once a day keeps your bond close if you’re away from home.
- All About Academics
-
The Rory Gilmore aesthetic would be incomplete without her academic ambition and work ethic. Throughout her time at Chilton Academy and Yale University, she pursued her interest in journalism with enthusiasm. She can be a role model in that sense, whether you are a humanities, arts, or STEM major.
Midterms and finals season can be rough, but reminding yourself of the end goal can get you through the long nights and stressful exams. In five or even 10 years, you will think back on today with a lesser sense of importance. It won’t matter that you bombed your exam or struggled through a class. Even Rory herself had an identity crisis when her dreams were crushed by an internship.
Her iconic “Who cares if I’m pretty if I fail my finals?” line is a relatable motto for us to work hard in our education. I suggest making a vision board as a laptop screensaver for your aspiring profession as extra motivation.
- Reads and Reels
-
Beyond school, Rory had a few hobbies that kept her busy. One of Rory’s favorite pastimes was reading. If you have a favorite series you want to read, or a book adaptation you’re looking forward to, now is the time to open up that book!
It also helps to have a friend enjoy the same books with you. Jess, one of Rory’s boyfriends, shared her love of reading in the early seasons. Writing notes in the margins or debriefing on their opinions was a creative and intellectual way to pass the time, and it is one you can do in your life, too.
When her head wasn’t in a book, Rory was often at the movie theater with her mom. As a film-lover myself, I’ve seen so many new releases this year. I enjoy a good hangout at the theater, munching on popcorn or a sweet treat. However, I equally enjoy a good watch party from the coziness of my apartment. Whether it’s a night in or out, you can unwind with a fun film.
- Coffee, Coffee, Coffee!
-
Among the many things that Lorelai passed down to Rory was her love of coffee. In nearly every episode, you can see the mother-daughter duo at Luke’s diner grabbing coffee before their morning routines. At Yale, you could see her going to the coffee stand just as much.
If you need it as a pick-me-up, or to simply boost your mood, making coffee something to look forward to every day is a small thing to help you make it through classes!
After the seven seasons of Gilmore Girls, the character arc of Rory becomes more flawed, but there are things we can appreciate about her wit and passions. Whether you’ve already seen the show a million times or are new to it, this is your sign to press play and get inspiration on how to enjoy the little things about this cozy, fall season.
