A Letter to the Single Girl on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

To all my single collegiettes,

Some girls love the idea of romance. Some of us dread the entire month of February and all that comes with it. If you’re anything like me, you were so stressed that you forgot Valentine’s Day was coming up in less than two weeks. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, I think we can all agree that being single in college on Valentine’s day is stressful. Between Walgreens being stocked with pink and red candy and all your friends posting pictures of their “soooo amazing and sweet” gifts that their significant others got them, it’s easy to want to run and hide. I’m here to tell you—don’t.  For all my romantics out there, I get it. There’s a part of me that sheds a tear every time someone makes an engagement announcement. Then I resort to crying while eating three king-sized Hershey’s bars and watching You’ve Got Mail for the sixth time in a row.

Take it from me (someone who has been single for literally all her life), there is absolutely no reason to spend your V-Day on the couch feeling sorry about the fact that you’re not “taken”. Make the most of it this Valentine’s day; take advantage of all the freedom college life gives us. Go see a movie with a group of girlfriends. Have a classic “Galentine’s Day” brunch. Have a picnic at beautiful Lake Ella.  To women who love being young, wild, and free; you inspire me to love myself and my singleness more each and every day. I admire your strength and love for yourself. It takes a great deal of confidence to ignore the constant pressures for commitment and enjoy the freedoms that college life has to offer.

Our family, our friends and even strangers are constantly asking “Why aren’t you in a relationship? Are you talking to anyone? Aren’t you just a little sad that you’re alone?”.

Here’s the truth. We are perfectly happy exploring this season of singleness. Some of us are a little depressed (and don’t need constant reminders), but we don’t have to be; we have our girlfriends, our chocolate, and most importantly, our wine.

With lots of love and girl power,

Alana
