Learning “What’s New With Nikki,” a 15-Year-Old With Her Own Podcast

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

This week I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Nikki Nadler, a high school sophomore from Cooper City, Florida. Nadler recently started her own podcast to discuss politics and current event issues called “What’s New With Nikki.” During our interview, Nadler told me about her podcast’s backstory, the process to create an episode, and her plans and goals for the future.

Her Campus (HC): What inspired “What’s New With Nikki”?

Nikki Nadler (NN): I would say that it is the lack of education for people about the behind the scenes aspect of politics. In my community, people have very few outlets to politics and find it hard to educate themselves further. I wanted to eradicate that issue across the board!

HC: How did you go about setting up your podcast?

NN: I created a set plan for what I wanted it to look like, and I researched what programs supported that.

HC: Did you receive any help in the process? If so, from who/where? What did you do to fund your podcast?

NN: I originated it by myself and have a small team to maintain it. No one funds the podcast; it is recorded with household items!

HC: That’s amazing! You go, girl! What was the process for getting “What’s New With Nikki” published on Spotify?

NN: Thank you! I use a program called Anchor that has a partnership with a bunch of other streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and some more. All I have to do is fill in and meet the requirements, and I had to undergo the approval process.

HC: How do you decide on what topic you’re going to discuss in each episode?

NN: I decide based on what I think are important things to cover, based on what is happening in politics and current events.

HC: I saw that you sometimes have guests on your podcast. How do you pick them?

NN: There is a rolling application in our bio!

HC: That’s so cool! How do you pick from your applicants?

NN: It really depends on what is happening in society. Part of the application says to choose what you would like to talk about. From those, I decide what the more time-sensitive or urgent matters that need to be discussed are.

HC: What are your future plans regarding your podcast, and what goals do you wish to achieve with it?

NN: I honestly haven’t thought too much about the long term with this podcast. But I know for certain that I want to keep it running for as long as I can. The episodes I have released can apply to any time frame, so I would love to keep it up for as long as possible.

HC: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

NN: I would say that education for all is important. Especially today, people are so close-minded and refuse to learn anything about a different political viewpoint. So, it is important to be open and tolerant of other ideas!
