Last Minute Flights Anyone?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Back in September of 2017, Hurricane Maria came roaring into Puerto Rico and several islands of the Caribbean. On Sept. 20, the island was hit with winds of over 155 mph, knocking down trees and destroying civilization. The Category Four storm demolished homes and flooded the streets. Hurricane Maria was the strongest storm Puerto Rico has seen in 85 years. For months, people were left without power or basic civilization. The economy had completely crashed. After needing months of repair, the island was finally open to tourism by December 2017.  While Puerto Ricans welcome tourists into their land, they ask you to understand the circumstances in which they have been living.

As spring break rounds the corner, one Stoneman Douglas survivor, David Hogg, uses his platform to encourage people to help those in Puerto Rico by visiting this spring break. On Feb. 24, 2018, David tweets, “Better Idea: Spend your spring break in Puerto Rico, it’s a beautiful place with amazing people. They could really use the economic support that the government has failed to provide. #SpringBreak2018 #SBinPurtoRico #itsspelled PUERTO RICO.”  Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better idea myself!

David was soon supported by his fellow Douglas High survivors, telling people to stay away from Florida and head to Puerto Rico. While the economy is not at its peak, we can make that difference. If you visit, stay at an Airbnb, not a corporate hotel. If you want food, find the local restaurants or street food. Most of the time that’s where you’ll find hidden gems. Don’t be afraid to reach the Puerto Rican culture and shop locally no matter what you’re looking for. By doing this, you’ll make the change to getting Puerto Rico fully restored from what mother nature has destroyed. The beaches are still beautiful and most of these options will save you money too!

For most, it is a little late to make those last-minute modifications for spring break. However, the tweet doesn’t have to only apply to our week-long tanning sessions! If you or your family want to take a trip soon, consider visiting the beautiful land! It can provide a wonderful trip and help people in need along the way.

Here are a few things to check out next time you’re in Puerto Rico:

Check out Old San Juan

With restored buildings from the sixteenth and seventeenth century, you’ll get a better understanding of the history of the classic tourist spot.

Gear Rentals

This can range anywhere from scuba diving to surfing. The island is filled with beautiful beaches and plenty to do. Take a lesson, or just go out for some paddle boarding. The possibilities are endless!

Sandra Farms Coffee

Like myself, and most college students, my body survives on coffee. At this location in Puerto Rico, you can check out where some coffee beans are grown and harvested. Finish off your tour with a cup of some freshly brewed deliciousness.
