An Inside Look in New York’s Fashion World With Gustavo Cadile

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Gustavo Cadile was born and raised in Argentina, born into a family of Italian descent. His great-grandfather, Enrico Dell’Acqua, was a great influential Italian textile industrialist in Italy and Argentina. Gustavo Cadile grew up following his family’s heritage and dreamt of becoming a designer. He started his career at the International Fine Arts College in Miami, Florida where he began his Fashion Design degree. From then on, he traveled around Europe and spent time in Italy, Milan and Rome. He consulted for designers in Europe and this grew his excitement in the design world, which led him to want to begin his work in New York. Once he moved to New York, he landed a once in a lifetime job with Perry Ellis, the epiphany of classic American Sportswear, as well he worked with Oleg Cassini’s bridal collection. From then on, Gustavo Cadile launched his own namesake label and has been growing since 2007. His dresses interweave Italian artistry with Argentinian imagery that creates his beautiful eye-catching gowns. His creations are brought to life with the best fabrics and are all overseen by him in New York City. Cadile won the New Emerging Designer award in 2007 at the Gold Coast Awards in Chicago, after in 2013, he collected the Fashion Group International Award in Miami. His work continues as of now in New York City, where he continues to create and expand his collections.

Her Campus (HC): How has fashion and design changed your life?

Gustavo Cadile (GC): Coming from a very small town in Argentina and moving to the U.S. was a very difficult move, but I’m very blessed with all the opportunities that I had and that changed my life. From the incredible knowledge, I’ve gained at the Miami University of Art and Design through all the learning job experiences and having my brand for the past 14 years.

HC: What is it like working in your field?

GC: After graduating from the Miami University of Art and Design in 1997, I moved to Italy and had a great opportunity to work for an established Haute Couture house between Rome and Milan.  In May of 2000, I got hired in New York City to design for Perry Ellis International for three years. After that, I designed for a Bridal House. In 2007 launched my own brand, till today that I continue designing and selling the ready-to-wear line for Saks Fifth Avenue and the Bridal collection to Bergdorf Goodman. I’ve been working in this field for almost 23 years and I am very happy to have gained international experience that helped me with my own brand.

HC: What is your favorite trend for Fall 2020?

GC: My favorite trend was a detachable train, corseted dress, made in all the jewels tones for Fall 2020, it is a gown that can be worn from day to nighttime.

HC: What is your favorite look you have made so far?

GC: One of my favorites looks was inspired by a fuchsia flower called “Dark eyes”, I used 25 yards of organza to create the petals made out of ruffles.

HC: Who is your favorite person you have designed for?

GC: My favorite person that I have dressed in many occasions was Oscar-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, she is a real movie star that is the inspiration for every collection I’ve design representing Hollywood glamour.

HC: If you have any advice to give young people getting into fashion, what would you tell them?

GC: My advice to young people would be to follow their dreams and never give up.

After graduating from a fashion school, get a lot of experience working for a fashion brand to understand the insides of the business and when they are ready to embark in their own line, learn who the clients will be. Work will all your heart and be very focus and persistent.
