On Wednesday, Sept. 28, it was announced that Hugh Jackman would reprise his show-stopping role as Wolverine in the upcoming film Deadpool 3. The surprising news was revealed by Ryan Reynolds, the actor who plays the character Deadpool, in a comedic video uploaded on his Instagram account.

“Hey everyone. We’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working really hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now. I’ve had to really search my soul on this one,” Reynolds explains in the video directed toward the franchise’s fans. “His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character. Find new depth and motivation, new meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside… And I… I have nothing. Yeah… just… completely… empty up here. And terrifying,” the actor jokes.

The ending of the Instagram video was quite the shock as fans saw a ‘very’ familiar face. “But we did have one idea. Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?”

Jackman visibly appears in the background and replies “Yeah, sure, Ryan.”

Jackman’s first iteration of the character was depicted on-screen in the first X-Men film which was released in 2000.  He was soon featured in many other movies including X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine and X-Men: Apocalypse to name a few. Jackman’s portrayal of this character spans 17 years and nine films. It has been over five years since Jackman’s character was last seen on the big screen following the release of his standalone movie Logan in 2017.

The appearance of Wolverine has fans wondering how the superhero will be incorporated into the upcoming film after his character was brutally killed off in the movie Logan. In a video shared and uploaded on Youtube, Reynolds clarified this confusion to those curious. “‘Logan takes place in 2029. Totally separate thing. Logan dies in ‘Logan.’ Not touching that.” While Jackman has come out of retirement for the feature in this film, it is still unclear as to whether this is a permanent decision or a one-movie deal.

In 2019, Marvel purchased 20th Century Fox which allowed the company to claim rights to Deadpool, along with other heroes such as the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. This announcement struck excitement within Marvel fanatics as they could now watch their favorite characters collide in theaters. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, MCU, is an extremely diversified and unique world filled with a collection of heroes and villains that many grew up with through comics. Wolverine and Deadpool, who were previously owned by Fox, will now join this wide array of characters including Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Hulk, Captain Marvel and many more.

Deadpool 3 will premiere in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024. While that date is a little less than 2 years away, fans can spend their days rewatching the many X-Men movies and previous Deadpool films in the meantime, as preparation for the release.
