Dear collegiettes, Â
“MTV cordially invites you to My Super Sweet… an extraordinary television event featuring the most important day of your life marked by the greatest of celebrations – Sweet Sixteen, Quinceanera, Debutante Ball, Debut, or any other coming of age milestone event – if it’s going to be lit, we want to know about it!”
This is just an excerpt from the email by Doron Ofir regarding the reboot of My Super Sweet 16. Grab your tiaras and scepters, boys and girls, it’s going to be a wild ride (in a brand new Range Rover, of course)!
Transport yourself back to a simpler time, when you were too young for The Bachelor to be your guilty pleasure. Then keep going further back, between the years of 2005 and 2008 to be exact, to when spoiled rich girls and boys threw the most extravagant and expensive Sweet 16 parties. All the while, MTV caught every second of it (including every tantrum) on camera. That’s right people, a time when My Super Sweet 16 existed. It’s true that the bulk of characters that appeared on this show were seriously unlikeable, which is something that their underappreciated parents and party planners could probably agree on. Regardless, back in the day, people simply couldn’t get enough of it and My Super Sweet 16 became one of MTV’s greatest reality TV shows.
Remember when Sophie had a complete meltdown when her mother and father suggested that she get her birthday donuts from Publix instead of Dunkin Donuts? How about the time when those two girls arrived at Dior in search of the perfect party dress only to find that it was closed? The best memory by far was when Audrey threw a temper tantrum because she got her brand new car before her party, instead of during the party like she wanted (it wasn’t even the car she asked for)! Don’t get too nostalgic though, because My Super Sweet 16 is making a huge comeback, and there’s a twist. Â
While My Super Sweet 16 was notoriously known for being a show that follows around ridiculously rich teenagers that threw the craziest Sweet 16 celebrations, now you don’t even have to be on the verge of obtaining your license to join in on all the fun! According to the casting company’s email, any huge “coming-of-age” event is suitable entertainment and will be considered by producers. There is no age requirement! The casting directors simply ask that you are “the most popular, outrageous, glitzy, girl [or] boy” who is “planning extravagant parties that will show the world just how #blessed they really are!” That’s easy enough.
You know what this means? My Super Sweet 21st Birthday Bash, My Super Sweet Graduation Party and My Super Sweet Wedding Day are all possibilities! Whether you will be watching, attending or throwing the parties, get ready for more sports cars, insane celebrity performances, over-the-top cakes and the biggest tantrums you have ever seen.
You can almost hear the sound of Hillary Duff belting out the lyrics to “Sweet Sixteen” through your TV speakers right now.
