From Gigi to Yeezy, Here’s What You Missed at Fashion Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

When you hear the words “New York City” or “Fashion Week,” what comes to mind? Big city and bright lights, trends and styles that will soon be “in,” supermodels being photographed by paparazzi at every corner and after parties with endless champagne are just a few things that you may be thinking of. Maybe new fashion trends and famous models strutting down runways isn’t your thing, but for those of us who anxiously await this coveted week in fashion, it’s like Christmas morning. Fashion Week basically gives us our guidelines of the “ins and outs” of this year’s fall season, as well as a look at the upcoming Spring/Summer of 2017 season. This year, Fashion Week didn’t let us down, giving us new trends like velvet, one shoulder looks, metallics, chunky boots and more. Designers like Tory Burch, Alexander Wang and Tom Ford were just a few to debut new Fall 2016 and Spring/Summer 2017 looks that took the runway by storm.

Just as much as we love to read about Fashion Week, stars love to be a part of it. Gigi Hadid and Tommy Hilfiger recently just collaborated on a new clothing line filled with fun, nautical themes with a twist of Gigi Hadid’s signature street style. Gigi is the perfect fit for this line: she’s fashion’s “it girl,” has one of the largest fan bases at the moment and everyone wants to be her. So, why not try to steal her style? With the Tommy X Gigi line, now you can. When describing the concept of the line on Good Morning America, Gigi said, “It’s a really great mix of the classic East coast style of Tommy Hilfiger and my West coast style.” So, if you want to rock a Gigi inspired look with elements of Tommy’s classic style, this line is the perfect fit. The clothing line consists of knits, pants, shoes, accessories and that classic Gigi bomber jacket. Just as fun as the theme of the line is, the runway set was too. The runway was set up like a carnival titled “Tommy’s Pier,” filled with tons of rides, tasty carnival food and more. Big stars, like Taylor Swift, Yolanda Hadid and Martha Hunt, were sitting front row to support Gigi on her newest endeavor with Tommy Hilfiger.

Kanye West also made Fashion Week history with the debut of Yeezy Season 4 with an exclusive triangle-shaped runway show in New York’s Roosevelt Island. Sticking to true Yeezy style, the line consisted of clothing like sports bras, thigh high boots and body-hugging garments. The color scheme for the line is relatively neutral, sticking to colors like creams and nudes. When creating his new line, Kanye spoke to Vogue exclusively saying, “I want to make pieces that can be timeless. Pieces that you can pick up out of a vintage store in 20 years and say, ‘Wow, I’m happy I have this.’” Kim Kardashian, Kendall and Kylie Jenner were big supporters of the new Yeezy line, donning some of the new garments as they watched from the front row of the show. Teyana Taylor, the new “it” girl from his “Fade” music video, and Sofia Richie, daughter of Lionel Richie, rocked the Yeezy runway debuting the new season.

Sadly, the glamourous seven to nine days of Fashion Week must come to an end. Looking back at the week, we were blessed with major collaborations like Tommy X Gigi and new additions like Yeezy Season 4, as well as innovative trends that are sure to stick around. Ending this past Thursday with shows from designers like Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein, Fashion Week 2016 has again left its everlasting mark of the do’s and don’ts of this years Fall 2016 and Spring/Summer 2017 season.
