FSU Sports Teams to Cheer On This Spring

With football season being over, Saturdays can seem blander now. Although if you look hard enough, you’ll see FSU has a multitude of opportunities to support athletics. They have numerous spring sports colliding with one another, with many basketball games and tennis matches landing on the same day.

The FSU Athletics calendar offers a little something for everyone. There are longer games, such as baseball or softball, if you’re looking to sit and watch as players hit and run for two to three hours. If you’re looking for something a bit quicker, head over to the Civic Center to catch a few minutes of squeaking shoes and baskets being made, or support FSU’s new lacrosse team!

Almost every weekend, there’s a sporting event happening, and they’re all pretty cheap, or even free, for FSU students. Grab your FSU shirt and head out to the nearest field, court, or track to support any team listed below.

Baseball & Softball

Weekends don’t have to be just about touchdowns and field goals; catching a game at FSU’s Dick Howser Stadium can be just as exciting. The baseball team is full of recruits this year, with many players graduating or transferring after the past season. Meaning, their first few games will be full of surprises, with each inning bringing a new player to the field to show off what they’ve brought to FSU.

The softball team is just as exciting as baseball, having previously won an NCAA National Championship. Their team is full of incredibly impressive pitchers and batters, bringing excitement to your spring semester. Both baseball and softball are very long games, so if you’re looking for an activity that’ll take up most of your afternoon, I’d recommend cheering on either one of these teams!

Basketball

Basketball season has been underway for quite some time now, with the men’s team currently at 8-12 and the women’s team at 7-14. This might not seem enticing, but both men’s and women’s games are exhilarating, no matter what the score turns out to be. There’s a lot of ball movement, constantly exchanging hands, and when the Civic Center is packed, the energy is incredible.

Not only are the games energizing, but the opposing teams are also often riveting rivals. In the coming weeks, FSU’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are scheduled to play Miami and Stanford. Basketball games are only a couple of hours long at most, and they’re usually in the evenings. If you’re looking for some excitement after an excruciating day of class, then head over to the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.

Lacrosse

FSU’s women’s lacrosse team begins its inaugural season this spring, with its first game on Feb. 7 against Stetson University. They’ve been gearing up for this game for a few months now, although the team has been in development for over a year. Players were recruited from all across the country to make history and join the newest varsity sport here at Florida State.

Not only is FSU’s women’s lacrosse team brand new, but so is the facility they’re playing in. The freshly built Seminole Lacrosse Complex has a field that’s lined with stands and grassy areas for fans and families to watch from. It’s a short drive from campus, and the perfect place to go if you’re hoping to support the 18th NCAA-sanctioned team here at FSU.

Other Teams to Watch

In the spring, FSU’s golf, tennis, track & field, and beach volleyball teams also compete. They each have their own matches and meets, all scattered on various weekends throughout the coming months. If you’re looking to fill a long day watching a slower-paced sport, I’d recommend heading out to watch our golf team for a day. If you’re hoping for something more fast-paced, then tennis is the sport for you. Both track & field and beach volleyball offer opportunities to spend a few hours outside, cheering the players on as they sprint to the finish or try for an ace.

No matter your interest, FSU has a spring sport for you. Although these sports might not have the same exciting pre-game culture as football, don’t let that stop you! Supporting all athletics is just as important, and every game, match, or meet will kill a few hours if you’re tired of being cooped up all day.
