Former Florida Governor Nominee Announces Bisexuality

In an interview conducted on Monday with Tamron Hall, ex-Tallahassee Mayor and former Democratic nominee for Florida Governor Andrew Gillum sat to discuss the incidents in his life that occured following the 2018 election. In the intervew, he addressed speculations and announced that he identifies as bisexual. 

Who was Andrew Gillum before he ran for governor of Florida?

Andrew Gillum was born in Miami, Florida but was raised in Gainesville, Florida, where he was the fifth among seven siblings.

After he graduated high school, he moved to Tallahassee and attended Florida A&M University. During his time there, he served as the president of the Student Government Association, was one of the first to serve on the Board of Trustees as a student, and was also one of the youngest elected for Tallahassee City Commissioner before earning his college degree. Soon after, Gillum graduated from Florida A&M University, where he earned a degree in political science.

After serving nearly 11 years as City Commissioner and spearheading numerous community initiatives, in 2014, he ran and won mayor of Tallahassee, and served as mayor up until 2018. It was during this year that he announced his candidacy for Florida Governor, eventually losing against Republican opponent Ron DeSantis.

What happened after Gillum lost the race for Florida governor?

After losing the 2018 race to Republican Ron DeSantis, Gillum was found intoxicated in a Miami Beach hotel room, while a male escort was also found passed out. Police were called and responded to the scene for a possible drug overdose incident. Video footage and photos of the scene, identifying Gillum, were leaked on the internet.

Although not charged in the incident, soon after he announced in a statement that he would be checking himself into a rehab center. He admitted that losing the race by less than half a percent led to alcohol abuse and struggles with mental health. He then withdrew himself from the public and social media presence.

What is Gillum up to today?

Since his removal from the public, Gillum made his first appearance on Monday in an interview with Tamron Hall. He thanked both the help of rehab and support of his wife for getting over his public shame and ultimately what seemed like the destruction of his political career.

In the interview, Andrew Gillum sat to discuss the incidents in his life that occurred following the 2018 election. He also addressed speculations about his sexuality and announced that he identifies as bisexual.  

“To be very honest with you, when you didn’t ask the question, you put it out there is whether or not I identify as gay and the answer is I don’t identify as gay, but I do identify as bisexual,” Gillum told Hall on her talk show Tamron Hall Show.
