The Best Advice I Got From Sex and the City

If you’re an avid Sex and the City watcher like I am, you know that the four leading ladies have been through the wringer. Through six seasons they’ve been through dating, parties, fashion, love and more. Through it all, each character has shared some of the best tips for being a young adult. Here are some of my favorite pieces of advice from the show that I now live by!

1. “Maybe we can be each other’s soulmates. And then we can let men be just these great, nice guys to have fun with.” – Charlotte York

This may be my favorite phrase ever and I think that Charlotte was so right about this. Your friends really are the most important people in your life. While relationships may come and go, your closest friends are going to be there for life. Maybe your bestie really is your soulmate. This was such a nice thing to hear personally, I felt so warm and happy thinking about my friends as the people I’m meant to be with forever. Life is all about forming close friendships and it’s so important to remember that!

2. “I want to enjoy my success, not apologize for it.” – Miranda Hobbes

Sex and the City is notorious for showing different kinds of women and their life experiences and with this comes a lot of commentary on the treatment of women. Miranda says this quote about her career as a lawyer after her date shamed her for it. I was pumping my fist right along with the girls in support. It’s your life and your choices and you should have the right to celebrate your accomplishments no matter what they look like!

3. “You shouldn’t have to sacrifice who you are just because somebody else has a problem with it.” – Carrie Bradshaw

Carrie may be the messiest out of everyone from this show, but what she says here is golden. Such a large theme for these four ladies is navigating the world of dating and what the do’s and don’ts of being in a relationship are. This was such a big relationship yes. It’s not worth compromising who you are just for one person who can’t even love you for you. Your identity as a person is so valuable and precious. There’s no point in changing something about yourself for every single date, don’t settle and start living your life!

4. “If I worried what every b*tch in New York was saying about me, I’d never leave the house.” – Samantha Jones

Samantha Jones is hands down the best gal to listen to on matters of life and love. She has the attitude of being in it for her and only her. A lot of her most iconic phrases are empowering and full of spirit. This is one of her opinions that isn’t about sex for once, but is something that every college student or young adult should take to heart. Your life really is all about you, it doesn’t revolve around anyone else and others’ opinions shouldn’t consume your life so much that you stop living it! Start doing what you want because it’s for you!

Sex and the City may be a show full of sex and drama, but in between are lessons about love and life that still ring true today. The lessons that these ladies share are some that will last a lifetime and be there to guide you through your 20s and 30s.
