Ever seen a Ted Talk video that inspired you to make a change? Or think a new way? Did you know that FSU hosts their own TEDx program to get this experience live on campus?

TED was created by Richard Saul Wurman in 1984 to focus on three main categories: technology, entertainment, and design. After many conferences in California, the company was bought by Chris Anderson’s nonprofit Sapling Foundation. Since then, the company has only grown. In 2014, TED celebrated 30 years. It is now a large network of passionate people from all over the world. You can browse their thousands of Talks on their website.

TED launched TEDx in 2008 to spread ideas even further by creating a program to organize independent events. TED describes that each of their events “is organized by curious individuals who seek to discover ideas and spark conversations in their own community.” FSU has brought these ideas to our campus and hosted an event each year since 2010.

This year’s conference will take place on Apr. 12 at the Florida State Conference Center from 1-5 p.m. The event theme is “Question. Defy. Redefine.” They are talking about what it means to challenge thought, deny the barriers keeping you from achieving your goals and then redefining those barriers for others. In their video, they use famous innovators like Galileo Galilei, Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King Jr. and Ava Duvernay to illustrate how ordinary people made one choice to challenge the ways of society and revolutionized the world as we know it.

There will be 9 notable speakers at FSU’s event this year. Among these speakers are Jill Pable, an Interior Architecture & Design professor at FSU, Tiffany Rhynard, an award-winning filmmaker, and Savannah Grant, a senior at Florida State passionate about helping others find their purpose. The other speakers are Diego Corzo, Sonia Cabell, Amy Wetherby, Vicky Potter, Fabrice Guerrier and Erica Averion, all of whom are connected to FSU in some way. Each speaker will provide the audience with a unique perspective about innovation, knowledge and success. In addition to these speakers, there will be performances, food and more!

The events are put on and organized by FSU students. If you love the event, you can join TEDxFSU and be a part of the team that puts this conference together. They meet every other week from 5:30 to 6:30 in the Dunlap Success Center. For more information on joining this incredible group of students, email the team at tedxfsu@gmail.com

The 2019 Attendee Application is now open. Apply to attend by Mar. 31. According to their website, if you miss this deadline, there will be limited walk-ins available, so arrive early to secure your spot! Dress attire is business casual.

The closest parking will be the St. Augustine Garage. Luckily, for all you that are living in dorms, it is walking distance from campus. If you can’t attend, they will be streaming the entire conference at tedxfsu.com and videos will be uploaded to YouTube after the event. Be prepared to hear, as TED says, ideas worth spreading!
