Don’t Be Somebody’s Valentine, Just Be a Mermaid Instead

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Valentine’s Day is creeping up on all of us whether we’re in a relationship or not. This can be a hard day for single ladies because we are suddenly aware of just how many couples there are. Don’t be sad. Instead, find solace in the fact that you’re not wasting your money on a Valentine’s Day gift. Now you have extra money to buy clothes and accessories for yourself, and let’s be honest, online shopping is better than having a boyfriend. Spend the day giving yourself some retail therapy and perusing through these six ways to channel your inner mermaid.

1. Fishtail Braid

Ladies, a fishtail braid is one of the best ways to style your hair in the spring and summer. This braid is not too hard to accomplish either. First, separate your hair into two pieces. Take the piece in your right hand and pull it over to the left, then take the piece in your left hand and pull it over to the right. Repeat these steps and alternate from left to right. Don’t forget to keep it in place with your favorite hair tie. If you are more of a visual learner, let Lauren Conrad teach you her technique to fishtail braiding here. Pair this braid with a starfish hair clip from Etsy to look more like your favorite sea creature.

2. Sea Salt Spray There are very few better feelings than a trip to the beach. Sadly, not all of us have the time to go swimming in the ocean everyday due to our busy schedules during the spring and summer semesters. The beach isn’t necessarily in our backyard either. Fortunately, Bumble and Bumble has been kind enough to bottle the ocean for us. Just spray some of this product into your hair to give it some waves and volume and voilà, instant mermaid! Find it here or at your local Sephora store.

3. Bikini

Pinterest has an entire section dedicated to mermaid bikinis. Some of them are a little out there, but still fun to look at. For those of us that don’t want to be too extravagant, Victoria’s Secret is our go-to spot. The best colors to look for when shopping for a bathing suit are teal, aqua, sea-foam green, and purple. Not only are these mermaid colors, but they look good with every skin and hair color.

The best part about Victoria’s Secret is that you can mix and match, therefore diversifying your bathing suit’s color scheme. Check out the “mermaid teal” flounce top here and pair it with a “berry bliss” or “berry gelato” bottom here.

4. Nails This Formula X glitter nail polish is perfect for your mermaid look. It also comes in green as well as a few other colors. Buy it here or at your local Sephora store.

5. Accessories

Gold starfish necklaces, rings, and cuffs are the cutest accessories for spring and summer. Get them all at this website.

6. Leggings

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter. If you’re just not ready to start shopping for spring and summer yet, check out the mermaid leggings from BlackMilk Clothing because they are fabulous.
