Why You Should Be Excited for the Female-Dominated 2024 Grammys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

If you aren’t already planning on tuning into the 2024 Grammy Awards, it’ll be worth making some room in your schedule. With a star-studded performer list, noteworthy nominations, and possible history in the making, the biggest night in music is bound to be memorable. As someone who amassed almost 100,000 minutes of listening in their Spotify Wrapped this past year, I can’t wait to celebrate this notable year of music, and neither should you!

The 66th Annual Grammys will be broadcast on Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. EST, airing live on Paramount Plus and CBS. Hosted by Trevor Noah, the Grammys stage will welcome stars such as seven-time winner Billie Eilish, who has collected six nominations this year. Announced performers also include three-time winner Olivia Rodrigo (her sophomore album GUTS earned her six nominations), three-time winner Dua Lipa (with two nominations for “Dance The Night” from Barbie), Luke Combs (Best Country Solo Performance nominee), and Billy Joel.

What the nominations mean for women

Women are ruling the music scene, and this year’s Grammy nominations couldn’t make that more apparent. SZA, with her sophomore album SOS, is the most nominated artist of the year, receiving nine nominations. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie soundtrack earned a whopping 11 nominations across the board.

However, most noteworthy is that the Album, Record, and Song of the Year nominees are all female artists, except for Jon Batiste. These nominations prove that female artists have taken the music industry by storm, and I can’t wait to watch the Grammys celebrate all of these successful artists and give them their due credit. The music industry is in good hands!

Noteworthy nominations

In case you haven’t peeked at the nominee list yet, here are a few noteworthy nominations to prepare you for the broadcast:

  • SZA and Olivia Rodrigo are both only on their sophomore albums and are earning major nods for their work in the Grammys’ top categories.
  • Billie Eilish is back in full force with six nominations after earning two nominations last year.
  • Miley Cyrus earned six nominations, quite the achievement for an artist who has only received two nominations previously (one each in the 64th and 57th Grammys).
  • Lana Del Rey received five nominations, and a win in any of these categories would earn the artist her first Grammy award ever.
  • New female artists are entering the Grammys scene, with Gracie Abrams, Coco Jones, and Ice Spice earning nods in the Best New Artist Category.
  • Boygenius earned their first Grammy recognition with six nominations, with Phoebe Bridgers also receiving two additional nominations.

Both newcomers and veterans of the industry have created a dominating force in the music world, deeply influencing the world of music as a whole. This force of female artists is here and here to stay. Here is the full list of the 66th Annual Grammy Award Nominees.

Making Grammy History Era?

After Folklore’s Album of the Year win made Taylor Swift the first female artist to win the award three times, her AOTY nomination for Midnights could propel her to new heights. Another win in this category would make her the first artist to win AOTY four times! Swift’s music is a force unlike any other, and we’ll find out soon if Midnights will be the album to help her surpass Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon, and Stevie Wonder’s three wins.

From looking at the nominations, it’s easy to see that the music industry is in the safe hands of a strong force of female artists. There are so many more amazing, talented artists nominated this year that deserve the recognition, and I can’t wait to watch every artist’s hard work be celebrated. Make sure to tune into the 66th Annual Grammys next week to see some stellar performances, celebrate the past year of music, and possibly even watch history be made!
