The Memoir That Social Media Can’t Stop Talking About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Prince Harry’s new hit memoir has gone viral on social media. With numerous tweets and TikTok users showing their reactions to the most shocking clips of his audiobook, Spare has received much attention from the public. The prince’s memoir was released on Jan. 10 and was ghostwritten by J. R. Moehringer. He also recorded a 15-hour recording of himself reading in his voice. The book is now a #1 New York Times Bestseller and even broke the record for the fastest-selling non-fiction book ever

While receiving much praise for his openness and vulnerability, Prince Harry received quite a bit of backlash from critics for exposing the royal family. As a result, his popularity in the U.K. and U.S. has significantly dropped, along with being reportedly evicted from their UK royal residence, Frogmore Cottage.

Despite the mixed emotions surrounding the book, social media has done its job of dissecting the most shocking moments from the book and sharing their honest reactions — here are some of their hottest takeaways.

COMMENDED FOR HONESTY

Prince Harry has been commended for his sincerity and truthfulness throughout his memoir. Readers have also grown to admire him for his well-written accounts of memories, such as his time serving in the British Army and his evident passion for helping veterans.

ACCUSED OF BETRAYING FAMILY

The prince has been dragged on Twitter, with many tweeting #PrinceHarryIsTraitor from fans that side with Prince William and call Harry a “brat” for exposing his older brother.

Satire on South park

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were ridiculed in a recent episode of South Park, where he is mocked for his “incessant complaining” because of the privileged life he lived. In the clip above, the parody book title was WAAAGH, which shows how some people see his book as a big sob story. Several clips of the episode have been reposted all over social media. In one scene, the character Kyle tells his friends: “They have this huge jet parked in front of my house, and they keep on wanting me to buy their book.”

“PAthetic and iMMature”

Several Twitter users have gone for Harry’s throat after finding an Amazon review from supposedly the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for Spare. The review was written by a verified account praising the book for its “incredibly raw and emotional moments.” However, the review has been confirmed to be a fan account and goes to show how quickly people are to believe everything they read online.

CONTROVERSY OVER COURTNEY COx

Internet users have gone wild over details in Spare regarding Prince Harry’s confession of taking magic mushrooms at American actress Courtney Cox’s party. In his memoir, the Duke describes how he mistakenly thought he was staying at her house while she was away, but later he said, “Courtney turned up. I was very confused. Was her job canceled? I didn’t think it was my place to ask.”

Later at the party, he writes that he and his mate grabbed several, gobbled them (mushrooms), and washed them down with tequila. Instagram users criticized Harry for “snitching” out Courtney. One user said: “I’ll never read the book but why rat out on a friend who invited you to a private house party.” While another said, “He didn’t say she was passing them out… OMG … read the damn book! This exactly what he relays over and over in the book! The media plants stories …. Courtney obviously is just iterating that! She didn’t pass them out …”

RESEMBLANCE TO A DRAMATIC READING OF A FANFIC

Several TikTok users had gone on to poke fun at Harry’s oddly worded details of when he met Meghan. One of the weirdest lines was, “the woman had dog ears.” I don’t know about Meghan, but I’m not sure I’d want that to be the first impression I had on my future husband…

The prince directly quoted the Spice Girls’ 1996 hit “Wannabe” in the memoir when writing about his venture to South Africa with Prince Charles. Harry recalls when Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell) had grabbed his hand and was “the only Spice with whom I felt any connection—a fellow ginger.” The surrealness of the prince, including the lyrics in his book, has TikTok users commenting: “the yassification of Prince Harry” and “I still can’t believe it’s real..”

Explicit NAture

Several readers were left shocked after reading the amusing details of when the prince caught an “intimate case” of frostbite on his expedition to the North Pole. A clip from the audiobook has blown up on TikTok as several users have recorded their reactions to uncomfortably specific wording.

Social media users have been cracking up over his inability to say the name of his great adversary, former editor of Sun and News of the World editor, phone-hacker Rebekah Brooks. One user commented: “Harry is fully in his gossip girl era.” To avoid speaking her name, he called her “Rehabber Kooks.”

Touching homage to his mother

Harry’s heartfelt description of his mother, Princess Diana, has moved readers. While much of Spare has gone viral for the comical audio clips, several users on TikTok have praised the book for Harry’s touching words.

From exposing himself to exposés on others, Spare was an enlightening tell-all from Prince Harry. If you want to read the drama for yourself, you can buy the book online at Barnes & Noble
