Indie Star JAWNY On Life, Music, & Upcoming Projects

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Her Campus recently had the privilege of chatting with hit singer JAWNY. The indie pop singer-songwriter shared everything from music-writing techniques to words of wisdom to a sneak peek at an upcoming project.

JAWNY is gearing up for his second headlining tour, which begins March 3 and kicked it off with the release of his new single “true” which came out Jan. 13. However, he’s not stopping there: he announced that his new album It’s Never Fair, Always True will be released on March 3. JAWNY gave us further insight into the project by playing two featured songs from the album. Based on those tracks, we’re in for some more head-banging, carefree tunes that will be the perfect summer anthems.

When asked more about what he hopes to achieve with this upcoming album, JAWNY told us he aims to have a diverse discography that has “a song for whatever mood someone is in that day.” He told us that with these new tracks, he wants to continue to relate to fans that have different backgrounds. JAWNY expressed how much love he has for storytelling and how he really wants his music to be a narrative of different events that will come together as a mix of stories and emotions.

Like most artists, JAWNY has his own approach to writing music. He told us that much of his inspiration comes from his experiences growing up. Originally from the Bay Area and later moving to South Carolina, JAWNY considers Green Day and Southern Rock to be two of his biggest musical influences. He also disclosed that he spent the majority of his time before fame producing rap beats. When you put it all together, his music tends to be “a melting pot of the three genres.” When it comes to actually sitting down and writing a song, JAWNY told us that a lot of the time there’s no specific structure or system he has. He says sometimes the words come first and sometimes the melodies do and sometimes he’ll just be messing around with some instrumental ideas and a song comes out. Usually, the process happens very fast and JAWNY said that if it doesn’t happen very quickly, it’s not worth more time.

When asked about his sound and how it changed throughout the years, JAWNY explained that everything he does changes. He said that as he grows as a person, his tastes and interests change and that gets reflected in his music. JAWNY describes his overall outlook on his music and writing processes as something that focuses on his interests. One of JAWNY’s most important core values is that “whatever you’re making, you should make it for yourself first.” He expressed his genuine belief in focusing on staying true to himself and not getting caught up in trending concepts or judgment. Even throughout the interview, JAWNY stayed true to this, as he constantly showed how unique his personality and point of view are.

JAWNY’s aspirations of focusing on what he likes and gets excited about is also a key to what he hopes to achieve with his new album. Since he’s open to how his music changes as he grows as a person, he told us he really wanted to push his limits and create his dream record with this new album. He says he wants it to reflect all his hopes and dreams from when he was 17 or 18 when he didn’t have the means to produce something he loved as he does now. His new album will push boundaries and experiment with concepts he can play around with, all with the goal of creating something he really loves.

We’re so excited here at Her Campus for JAWNY’s upcoming tour and new album. With catchy beats, emotional lyrics and diverse tracks, JAWNY’s music speaks for itself. Check out if he’s coming to a city near you and stream his latest single, “true”!
