How the Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez Drama Proves That Gen Z Is Chronically Online

The Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber feud has been dominating social media platforms like TikTok and Twitter, more than other celebrity drama ever has. A new alleged feud between the two has been rumored to have been started up again and it has to do with the most invigorating thing ever: eyebrows. Selena Gomez posted a video on TikTok explaining how she accidentally over-laminated her eyebrows and Kylie Jenner soon after posted a picture to her Instagram story of a close-up of herself and Hailey Bieber on facetime showing nothing but their eyebrows. This fired up Gen Z and caused many people to start reposting Jenner’s Instagram story on TikTok with captions like “Side Eye” and “Highschool Mean Girls.” Kylie Jenner later commented that her post was not made to poke fun at Selena in any way, but this left people to go crazy on social media.

The start of this alleged internet beef originated in 2018 when Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez ended their on-again, off-again relationship of eight years, and Bieber married (then) Hailey Baldwin just months after. This quick building relationship started many rumors that there was an overlap in the relationship between both Selena and Justin, and Hailey and Justin. While I cannot confirm or deny these rumors, one thing is for certain: Gen Z is highly invested in the media uproar of their relationship.

All the alleged rumors have sparked an even bigger discussion of how Gen Z is chronically online. People have started using the term chronically online for people who spend a problematic amount of time scrolling social media. People have been digging up old tweets, pictures and videos of Hailey Bieber allegedly being a “Jelena” stan for days. A rumor about how Hailey Bieber has been copying Selena Gomez’s looks, social media presence and personality for years has also been started up by Gen Z’s investment in this alleged feud. The way that Gen Z is pulling up and finding tweets dating back to 2011 shows how unhealthily invested this generation can be in celebrity drama. Other celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Kendall Jenner have even been dragged into these Gen Z colluded rumors by association. In October of 2022, Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber posed together for the first time, and the images that were taken SHATTERED the internet.

It was like fireworks exploded above everyone’s head and the rumored beef was squashed. If you’re anything like me and you have been keeping up with these updates for the last five years, this picture came as a huge surprise. I thought they would never be seen together because of how messy media outlets made the entire situation seem. It got me thinking if any of the rumors were true and if people really had enough information to choose a side.

One thing is for certain: Gen Z spends so much time on their phone. I know my TikTok “For You Page” has been flooded by this celebrity drama and hours of my time have been spent sending TikTok’s back and forth to my friends about the alleged drama. Because this is one of the messiest celebrity love triangles of our generation, many people are extremely passionate about whose side to take without knowing the full information. I definitely have my moments where I am way too chronically online and have had to delete my social media apps. The reality is we have no idea how big this feud is, and we don’t really know if it IS in fact a feud. What we should keep in mind about this whole situation is to be just as invested in our own lives as we are in celebrities’ lives, and to stop being oh so chronically online.

Neither Hailey Bieber nor Selena Gomez has commented on this matter at the time of publication, so I think it’s safe to say it’s time to put the matter to rest.
