All the Easter Eggs Leading Up to ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Coming from a 1989 girl, it’s finally our time to shine. Taylor Swift is the mastermind of teasing her fans with Easter eggs leading up to her new releases and announcements. So of course, for the announcement of one of her biggest re-records, 1989 (Taylor’s Version), there was never a dull moment for eager-eyed Swifties. 1989 was originally released in 2014 and became one of Swift’s trademark albums, with three songs hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The singer herself even stated that the album has “changed [her] life in countless ways.”

Swift started hinting at 1989’s re-record almost two years before its release, back in 2021. At that point, fans had already been enjoying Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and were getting ready for the release of Red (Taylor’s Version), which had been announced that summer. But the big question remained: how was Swift going to announce 1989 (Taylor’s Version)? Well, here’s a rundown of all of the easter eggs (and the announcement)!

The “Wildest Dreams” TikTok Trend

In Sep. 2021, right before the release of Red (Taylor’s Version), Swift released her re-recorded version of “Wildest Dreams” as a single, and it quickly became a viral TikTok trend. Many fans participated in the trend, excited that 1989 (Taylor’s Version) would be coming. Swift participated in the trend as well. In her TikTok video, she’s first seen painting her nails red but then there’s a transition to her standing on a balcony in a blue dress, synonymous with the blue on the 1989 album color.

The “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)” Music Video

Swift picked up the Easter eggs again in her music video for the track “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)” off Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). The video, released in July 2023, features celebrity cameos from actor Taylor Lautner and actress Joey King. Fans noticed that at the end of the video, Lautner, King, and Swift are seen driving away in a van under a sign that reads “1989 TV,” insinuating that the album announcement was on the way.

The SoFi Stadium Instagram Post

Shockwaves were sent around the Swiftie community leading up to Swift’s six-night stint in Los Angeles, California as part of the Eras Tour. The venue where it was held, SoFi Stadium, released an Instagram post three days before the shows began with some hints of a 1989 re-record. This included a picture of a lifeguard stand with “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” edited on one side of it, and a picture of a Hollywood Walk of Fame star with “Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version)” engraved on it. Fans who were planning on attending any of the Los Angeles shows were eager to know which night would include the long-awaited announcement.

Eras Tour – Los Angeles Night Six

It was a long time coming, but 1989 (Taylor’s Version) was finally announced on Aug. 9, 2023 (8/9, do you get it?) during the final night of the initial North American leg of the Eras Tour. Throughout the show, Swift teased fans with all-blue versions of the outfits she wore for each album and played the song “New Romantics” (in my opinion, one of the best 1989 songs) as one of the surprise songs for the night. Fans, myself included, rejoiced about the upcoming release of one of her most highly anticipated re-records.

We can trust that Taylor Swift always has something up her sleeve when it comes to hinting at new projects to her fans, and we all know that she has a lot of fun with it too. For a while, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) seemed to be in our “wildest dreams,” but now we can always have it on repeat.
