15 Rom-Coms That Never Get Old

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

There’s nothing better than a good movie night. If you’re ever struggling to find something to watch or need a good girl’s night movie, take a look at this list! Any of these movies are going to be a hit. Just pick one, grab some popcorn, and start watching!

1. 27 Dresses

Katherine Heigl, an actress who aces every role, is the star of 27 Dresses. She takes the screen as a woman who is “always the bridesmaid, never the bride.” After being a bridesmaid a whopping 27 times, she’s forced to help her polar opposite sister plan her wedding with the man that she’s in love with. She runs into a wedding reporter (played by James Marsden) who takes an interest in her case, and they become friends.

This movie always makes me laugh. Complete with a “Bennie and the Jets” duet between Heigl and Marsden, this is a go-to movie night selection.

2. 10 Things I Hate About You

This film has all the elements of the perfect classic ‘90s/2000s rom-com, complete with cliques (though slightly more comical ones) and the perfect love interest, Heath Ledger.

In a nutshell, Ledger’s character is paid to ask out Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles). The reason for this task is to help another boy, the new kid at their high school, date Kat’s sister. This is because their father will only allow Kat’s sister, Bianca, to date if Kat does. With an abundance of comedic characters, this movie is always a good watch. BRB, going to watch now.

3. Aquamarine

This is a movie that defined my childhood and all things girly. From the color scheme to the Y2K montage, this movie is the epitome of growing up in the 2000s. The fashion choices and soundtrack all make it so nostalgic.

Aquamarine, a mermaid washed up after a storm, grows legs and becomes friends with two other girls. Their adventure, guided by an attempt to get a guy for Aqua so she can stay and doesn’t have to marry a merman she doesn’t love, turns into a lifelong friendship.

If you’re looking for the perfect movie for a girl’s night and want a bit of nostalgia, this is the right choice.

4. Mamma Mia!

There’s not much more to be said. If you haven’t seen this movie, stop reading and go watch it. It’s simply required.

5. Ocean’s 8

This movie has an all-star cast, and it’s the most girlboss film I can think of. The close attention to detail and intricate plot leaves me thinking every time I watch it.

Sandra Bullock stars alongside Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, and more. In a typical Ocean’s fashion, the women team up to pull off an epic heist at the Met Gala. Funny and clever, this movie will be sure to make you smile.

6. The Proposal

Oh, how I love this movie. Sandra Bullock plays Ryan Reynolds’ uptight Canadian boss who will be deported back to Canada if she doesn’t find a loophole. Reynolds’ character agrees to be “engaged” to her if she agrees to let him off work to go to his grandmother’s (Betty White) 90th birthday party.

This movie is a wild ride. Unexpectedly funny scenes will leave anyone laughing for the duration of the film. All I can say is that Bullock’s rendition of “Get Low” is my favorite part by far.

7. 13 Going On 30

Another classic. Jennifer Garner’s smile and witty attitude bring her character to life. Jenna Rink is a 13-year-old who wishes she could be “30, flirty, and fabulous.” When this wish comes true, she must navigate her working and social life.

This is a great movie for any girl to watch. It teaches you that growing up fast isn’t always a good thing and that real friendships are more valuable than ones that you think make you look better.

8. Grease

If you don’t know this movie, then I’m very glad that you’re reading this article. Set in the “fabulous ’50s” but released in 1978, Grease is a classic musical filled with catchy songs and unique characters. There’s not much more to be said if you’ve watched it. The Romeo and Juliet-style plot speaks for itself (it’s amazing). If you haven’t seen it though, you’re missing out!

9. 16 Candles

Gosh, I love this movie. Watching this on your 16th birthday is a privilege. This coming-of-age film follows Samantha Baker’s 16th birthday. With stars from “The Brat Pack,” including Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall, this film was destined for success.

Samantha’s love interest, Jake Ryan (played by Michael Schoeffling), is the popular jock who she thinks will never notice her. When her parents forget her birthday in the chaos of her older sister’s wedding prep, Jake is the goal. However, obstacle after embarrassing obstacle occurs and makes the movie infinitely laughable.

10. The Princess Diaries (1 and 2)

Anne Hathaway never fails us. In Anne we trust. Both the first and second films in the series are wonderful. Julie Andrews, always graceful and lovely, plays alongside Hathaway in this hilarious and precious film. They show us that friendship and family are more important than anything. With them, you can do anything — maybe even run a country!

In the sequel, we learn that love should never be forced, and the value of focusing on yourself. Things will work out if you have the right support system, and that includes yourself.

11. The Parent Trap

What’s better than a Lindsay Lohan classic with a sisters-switching-places plot? Here’s a hint: nothing! The whole vibe of this movie is both nostalgic and fun.

12. Princess Protection Program

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato?! What a combo. Gomez plays a girl named Carter, the daughter of an agent for the Princess Protection Program. Carter’s father must take Rosie, a princess from a small kingdom played by Lovato, home because her kingdom is under attack and she’s in danger. Rosie must co-exist with Carter, but they soon develop a unique friendship. This movie screams all things Y2K and has always been loved in my house.

13. Miss Congeniality

Sandra Bullock is a favorite actress of mine if you couldn’t tell. FBI agent Gracie Hart, who’s also a tomboy, must go undercover as a contestant in the Miss United States pageant to prevent an attack on the winner. She meets a ton of hilarious and unique characters that make the film worthwhile. Go give it a watch!

14. Monte Carlo

This movie is simply girlhood. Selena Gomez is amazing and so is this movie.

15. Any of the Cinderella StorY movies

Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Lucy Hale. Any of the 2000s spins on this classic tale are always going to be amazing. Duff alongside Jennifer Coolidge and Chad Michael Murray will always be my favorite, but you can’t go wrong with any of the Cinderella Story movies.

As midterms approach, stress is in the air and we all need a break. Put some time aside to watch one of these movies with a friend or in the comfort of your own bed. I guarantee you will love all these suggestions!
