When April rolls around and Spring truly starts to bloom, the citizens of Tallahassee are gifted with the opportunity to celebrate one of the city’s most unique and beautiful gifts: music. Every year, the most illustrious and diverse group of local musicians come together through their shared love of music in some not-so-typical locations.

Tallahassee Music Week is a week-long celebration and recognition of local talent by having them perform in some truly peculiar locations; including grocery stores, coffee shops, churches, bars, plant nurseries, car dealerships and more. The idea is to increase local business sales while also drawing attention towards our more artsy locals. The week of performances culminate in a giant celebration of music called the Word of South.

The event occurs from April 1-9 every year. Most of the events are free to the public, which makes the event that much more fun and family-friendly. One of the best parts of this event is seeing the wide range of people that are represented. This year, there were young children singing their hearts out, older musicians strumming heartily on their guitars and everything in between. In a time where our city (and country) feels divided about political and social issues, it’s nice to be reminded of our common ground with the uniting power of music.
