With the launch of FSU’s Institute for Strategic Partnerships, Innovation, Research, and Education (InSPIRE), FSU is making significant strides to impact STEM fields, including advanced manufacturing, engineering, aerospace, and more.

As FSU students, we’re familiar with our school’s commitment to developing a forward-thinking student body, driven by the possibility of improving and expanding life-changing initiatives both on campus and beyond. InSPIRE exists at the intersection of these possibilities.

Founded in October 2024, the institute is still in the early stages of development.

What is InSPIRE?

Operated by FSU and headquartered in Panama City, InSPIRE’s overarching goal is to foster the economic prosperity of Northwest Florida, focusing specifically on eight counties: Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf, Franklin, and Wakulla.

With an initial grant from Triumph Gulf Coast, a nonprofit managing settlement funds from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, InSPIRE aims to attract industry, strengthen the local workforce, and support visionary infrastructure in the region.

These initiatives will contribute to the transformed economic landscape and long-lasting resilience of Northwest Florida as a whole, increasing its resistance to any potential disruption, natural or economic.

InSPIRE’s key areas of focus include innovation and research, the development of state-of-the-art infrastructure, aero testing, and the expansion of workforce training programs. The institute’s efforts are not only expected to draw industry to the region but to impact aerospace, advanced manufacturing, defense, and more on a national level as advancements are shared.

InSPIRE also maintains a wide range of partnerships across academic, industry, and military sectors, including but not limited to collaborations with the Applied Science & Technology Research Organization (ATSRO America), the Learning Systems Institute (LSI), the Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP), the High Performance Materials Institute (HPMI), and FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

Who’s involved?

InSPIRE is led by a diverse group of professionals, a few of whom I’ll discuss in this article. At the helm is Executive Director Drew Allen, a retired Air Force colonel with 25 years of experience as both a fighter and a test pilot.

Over the course of his career, he’s logged more than 3,300 flight hours in over 55 different aircraft and is the only pilot qualified to fly every modern U.S. Air Force fighter jet. He leads advancements in aerospace, applied research, and national defense.

Chase Foster, an FSU alumnus, leads InSPIRE’s aerospace testing and engineering projects. He was a project engineer for the design, build, and commissioning of FSU’s Polysonic Wind Tunnel and has experience with complex engineering work in both industry and defense.

Christopher Billings, Ph.D., oversees InSPIRE’s advanced manufacturing initiatives, bringing experience in additive manufacturing to the table, in addition to knowledge on how to prepare facilities to support industry, academic, and military partners.

Carrie Meyers serves as co-director of FSU’s educational outreach for InSPIRE, along with Jim Reynolds, increasing teachers’ knowledge of cutting-edge STEM technology. She has almost three decades of experience in education, has authored and edited K-12 STEM curricula, and has written two student math books.

The team behind InSPIRE is extremely strong, and the list of members extends far beyond what I’ve included here. There are plenty more people working behind the scenes to make InSPIRE what it is and what it will be.

What does this mean for students?

Currently, InSPIRE is just getting started. While direct student involvement is still on the horizon, InSPIRE has a bright future ahead of it, and it’ll be exciting watching it grow over the years!
