As we enter finals season, study spaces are a must to help us concentrate on exams and papers. Luckily, FSU offers a plethora of places to study individually or with a group! Throughout the semester, you’ll find your niche spot that brings the right vibes you need for studying.
When Florida State University experiences the holiday season, the campus is transformed into a joyful setting reminiscent of classic Christmas films. From the funny Toilet Times issues to the random comedic incidents that occur, it almost feels like a movie. Let’s take a cinematic trip and discover the delightful similarities between classic Christmas films and FSU study areas.
Dirac: The Polar Express
I think we all know why Dirac has been chosen as The Polar Express. From the pin silent noise to the dark and gloomy aesthetic, the similarities are almost eerily close. The Polar Express follows a boy who hops on a train to go to the North Pole and embark on an adventure alongside a lively girl and a know-it-all boy. We see these characters throughout Dirac from the know-it-all STEM majors to the spirited English majors. This classic is also a very quiet movie with minimal lines, which reminds me of how quiet Dirac is and how focused most people in Dirac are on studying.
Strozier: Home alone
Strozier Library is the heart of FSU’s academic scene. Strozier’s large study spaces and vibrant energy evoke the joyous chaos of Home Alone. It’s usually a noisier study place. Friends come to motivate each other to study but usually are sidetracked by regular conversations.
In Home Alone, a boy is accidentally left behind by his family during their Christmas vacation and is forced to defend his home from robbers. Just like Home Alone, there are usually some unexpected and entertaining events that happen at Strozier. From the flooding of the basement to the elevator being broken, the chaotic energy is something that can’t be helped and makes Strozier what it is.
Thagard: This Christmas
Thagard is a study space that is friendly and family-oriented. The environment is always filled with laughter and is a safe space for people to wind down. This Christmas is about a family that comes together and is shocked to see the eldest sibling, who is in the military, come home and surprise them. The warm atmosphere from the faculty and students is much like This Christmas. Dr. Tata is like the mom who brings everyone together; he’s constantly bringing food and feeding anyone who enters the building.
The student Union: a charlie brown Christmas
The Union, though recently renovated, is still a hotspot for studying and catching up. The Union’s iconic charm and central location are reminiscent of the classic simplicity and charm of A Charlie Brown Christmas. It’s a place where students can enjoy different foods and connect with old friends. Love is always in the air because Mrs. Killings shares that love with everyone who enters the door. In A Charlie Brown Christmas, the other kids ask Schroeder to play jingle bells on the piano, which is definitely something that you’d find happening in the Union too!
During a stressful time in the semester, it’s important to take time away for yourself amidst all the studying. To bring more holiday joy into your studying, the next time you enter one of these study spaces, try to see what Christmas movie it reminds you of.  Â
