On Oct. 26, the singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran posted on Instagram to let his fans know that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Sheeran has been promoting his newest studio album, Equals (=). This album will be his fourth release, set to come out on Oct. 29.

At the start of September, the singer had performed at the VMAs, announced his tour that will run through America and parts of the United Kingdom, and announced his role as a Mega Mentor on The Voice in early October. However, his tour does not begin until April and most of these appearances may be done remotely. Moreover, The Voice episodes were pre-recorded before Sheeran had the virus. Although, the show has not released any statements regarding the situation.

Another event quickly approaching would have been his second appearance as a musical guest on Nov. 6 for Saturday Night Live. There has been conversation regarding a potential virtual performance, as Sheeran has stated in his Instagram post that he will do “as many of [his] planned interviews/performances [he] can from [his] house.” However, SNL has not done any virtual or non-live performance since the height of the pandemic. The production first went remote with SNL at Home during season 45 on April 11 in 2020. The cast returned to the studio several months later on Oct 6. While the show’s audience has varied in size, it is now consistently at capacity.

While fans were excited to see the singer once again, as he has not been on SNL since promoting his album X in 2014, with the show being back in full swing, they are likely to find another musical guest replacement for Sheeran. SNL has currently made no official comment regarding the situation.

Many have wondered whether or not Ed Sheeran is vaccinated, while the answer remains unknown.

Sheeran has never made it public whether he received a COVID-19 vaccine or not. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that while you can be fully vaccinated, there is still a chance of contracting the virus. Although, full vaccination helps prevent “infection, hospitalization and death.” However, as it pertains to entering the United States border unless you are fully vaccinated, there is no other legal way to enter without a blanket, medical, religious or Morales waiver—which are notoriously difficult to obtain. Many have speculated that if Sheeran were not fully vaccinated, it would have been difficult for him to leave his residence in the UK to fly to New York.

While this remains pure speculation, some have assumed that he is vaccinated. Additionally, in June of 2021, he appeared on James Cordon’s, The Late Late Show to rework lyrics from his song “Shape of You” in order, “…to inform and encourage people on vaccinations.”

Sheeran has made no other remarks as to his or his family’s situation since his Instagram post revealing his positive COVID-19 test this past Sunday. While his latest social media posts have only consisted of pre-recorded videos promoting his album, fans remain hopeful for good news.
