Best and Worst Outfits from the 2023 Met Gala

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

The Met Gala is notoriously known as “Fashion’s Biggest Night,” with A-list celebrities galore doused in designer clothing and suited to the night’s theme as they walk the red carpet. This year’s dress code was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” referencing the German fashion designer famous for his role as Chanel’s creative director.

This year’s Met Gala was certainly filled with beautiful gowns and unique suits, but there were also many outfits that seemed to miss the mark. Here are some of the hits and misses from the 2023 Met Gala.

Doja Cat — Hit

Doja Cat’s cat-inspired outfit was a personal favorite of mine, serving as a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette. Her prosthetic cat-like facial features are definitely a sight to get used to, but her floor-length dress is one for the books. I’m a sucker for sparkle, so this outfit is a definite hit in my book.

Jared Leto — Miss

Leto tried to be Doja Cat, but he was not successful. This outfit (can you even really call it an outfit?) seems more like a costume for a Cats inspired theme park. Or a haunted house.

Jeremy Pope — Hit

There is no doubt that Pope hit the theme on the nose, utilizing the notorious stairs as a tool to show off his fabulous train which showcased an image of Lagerfeld himself. To many, this outfit won him the 2023 Met Gala, and I simply can’t refute that statement.

Serena Williams — Miss

We all love Serena Williams, but I can’t say the same for this dress. It’s flapper-inspired, which tends to be cute, but this one has way too much going on. The sheer tulle skirt, layered pearl necklaces, pearl headband, and deep cut neckline, gave the impression that the dress wore her.

Despite the awkward dress, it was a delight to see her pregnancy announcement!

Michaela Coel — Hit

Coel absolutely rocked this Schiaparelli dress. Featuring over 130,000 crystals, this dress screams golden sun goddess, and we couldn’t be more in awe.

Rami Malek — Miss

There’s only one word for this outfit: boring. He looks virtually invisible among the hundred other celebrities walking the red carpet. Not a great look for Malek.

Lil Nas X — Hit

Lil Nas X gave a real show for everyone at the event, practically parodying our beloved Garnet and Gold guys, except in silver crystals. This outfit is also a tribute to Lagerfeld’s dear cat, Choupette, as seen by the silver whiskers detailed on his face.

Janelle Monae — Miss

Monae missed the assignment on this one, and to me, she was giving A$AP Rocky’s quilt last year. The outfit only got worse after she uncovered her coat to reveal a sparkling bikini. This one could have stayed at home.

Gisele Bundchen — Hit

This dress is absolutely stunning, and so extra, channeling the best angel vibes. This dress is a vintage piece from her collaboration with Lagerfeld for the Chanel Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2007 collection, where she wore the dress for the first time.

Maude Apatow — Miss

Don’t get me wrong, the dress is stunning. With the side cuts and the bejeweled border, this dress hits all the marks without being too much. But, as many have said, she does the hard deed of making a beautiful dress extremely boring.

Kardashian-Jenner Clan — Hit

The Kardashian-Jenner clan all popped off for this year’s Met Gala. Kylie’s simple, yet stunning, floor-length slit red dress. Kendall’s tribute to Lagerfeld’s iconic suit by wearing a bejeweled bodysuit accompanied by a train. And Kim’s timeless pearl piece checks all the marks. This family always brings their A-game.

Quinta Brunson — Miss

Being her first Met, it’s hard to criticize this dress. We all love this Abbott Elementary star, but the dress is giving ballerina-gone-bad. The sheer black lace over the bubblegum pink dress simply does not do her justice.

Cardi B — Hit

I literally cannot get over this dress. Similar to Kendall Jenner, she channeled Lagerfeld’s iconic suit. This gown, dawned with camellias, sets the bar, giving those in attendance something to remember.

Nicole Kidman — Miss

Kidman’s look definitely serves Plumette, the iconic feather duster from Beauty & The Beast, but not in a good way. The gown’s feathers wear her, especially with her lightly-done hair. This dress, similar to Bundchen’s, is also a vintage piece from her collaboration with Lagerfeld in 2003, except this outfit needed to stay in 2003.

Overall, there was definitely a lot to discuss last night. What are your thoughts on this year’s Met Gala?
