Kim K takes on SNL with Beauty, Banter and a Little Bit of Balenciaga

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

After last week’s 47th season premiere soared to an all-time low for Saturday Night Live, viewers were shocked to find reality star and billionaire, Kim Kardashian, hosting this past weekend.

However, it seems she was the spark that set the once-popular show back on fire as rates soared back to normalcy. Kardashian stepped out with a Balenciaga turtleneck jumpsuit, along with matching crushed velvet gloves and velvet knife boots to complete her look before beginning a monologue that roasted both herself and the show.

“I’m so used to having 360 million followers watching my every move, and how many people watch SNL? Like 10 million?” she quipped. “Tonight is just a chill, intimate night for me.”

Her delivery of deprecating jokes to herself and her family that ranged from her sex tape and momager, Kris Jenner, to saying her sisters show her picture to their plastic surgeon, earned her lots of laughs on and off-screen. Of course, the show writers also couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a stab at her father’s famous client, O.J. Simpson, as Kardashian made the controversial, yet jaw-dropping joke of how her “first black person” she met ironically “left a mark, or several.”

While there was a boost in ratings, some had doubts about the Skims founder’s lack of acting experience. The Washington Post quoted actress Debra Messing, who questioned SNL’s decision to choose a beauty guru for a host. “I mean, I know she is a cultural icon, but SNL has hosts, generally, who are performers who are there to promote…am I missing something?” she tweeted late Saturday night.

Others called Kardashian “rigid,” “mechanical” and “zipped-up,” like Vanity Fair’s Karen Valby. However, Valby found the celebrity endearing and even inspiring as the episode unraveled throughout the night. Many found the 40-year-old entrepreneur to be a “good sport” as it seems she allowed the writing staff to take every shot they could find against her and her famous, but controversial family. The KKW creator participated in one specific sketch titled “The People’s Kourt,” in which she played her disapproving sister, Kourtney Kardashian, who is judging a court case where Kris Jenner is suing Kylie Jenner for wasting their family brand’s money by not giving birth sooner.

Another was Kardashian roleplaying ABC’s The Bachelorette with a sketch titled “The Dream Guy,” in which the love interests ranged from John Cena and Chris Rock to Chase Crawford and former Bachelorette contestant Tyler Cameron. A hilarious exchange between Amy Schumer and Kim Kardashian was also seen after the reality star felt a “connection” with her producer and offered her a token, resulting in Schumer responding with a rather coy comment about accepting it with “both my holes.”

While this was her first time on SNL, Kardashian has been applauded for her commitment to the show and how well she fulfilled her hosting duties. With her sarcastic humor, high fashion and self-deprecating jokes, this performance has definitely left fans craving to keep up with this Kardashian.
