Way back in the early 2000s, a new line of fashion dolls made their way onto the aisles nationwide. Bratz rivalled Barbie’s claim to the shelves with their fresh Y2K aesthetic that made Barbie look way too preppy in comparison. Bratz was diverse, edgy, and a completely different style than what little girls were used to at the time. In the recent resurgence of Y2K fashion, there’s no better blueprint than the dolls themselves.
Every 20 years or so, fashion starts to loop back around to the newer generations. With late-90s and early-2000s fashion coming back, the Bratz can be seen as perfect inspiration for fashion looks with a nostalgic twist.
Bedazzled Everything
Now what’s a girl without a little bit of bling? Movies like Bratz Rock Angelz (2005) gave the girls incredible looks that were almost completely decked out in bling and sparkle. During the turn of the century, hip-hop and pop-rock had taken over music and pop culture, sparking the desire for all things leather and ripped, including bling.
Accessories like newsboy caps and transparent glasses rimmed with rhinestones became everything a little girl wanted. In recent times, the flared jeans look has come back, and styling them has become generic.
Using the Bratz as inspiration, adding a bit of sparkle, studs, and rhinestones makes all the difference. The bedazzled designs help elevate the jeans from looking plain to feeling more customized and more your own. Matched with a fitted leather jacket, you’d start to feel like you came out of the movie yourself.
Bringing Back London Streetwear
Bratz’ Pretty N’ Punk doll line was originally launched in 2005, dipping its toes into a more punk style. They used these streetwear looks in their iconic Bratz show when the girls went to London. The outfits took inspiration from real streetwear looks that became popular in the early 2000s, utilizing the Union Jack in creative outfits with plaid pants and bright hair.
The best part about streetwear is that you can have fun with it, cutting and sewing scraps you find together to make something entirely new and unique to you. It’s becoming harder and harder to set yourself apart from others, especially with everything being posted on the internet, but adding your own flair to basic pieces lets expression flow. I think bringing back the London punk look and fitting it into today’s fashion rotation would be a nice change for the coming fall looks.
Whimsy Elements
I might be a little biased on this one, but personally, Bratz Fashion Pixiez (2007) was the peak of adding whimsy elements to basic outfits. The colorful jeans were a staple for me as a kid, and honestly, even as I grew up and went to college, I still aspire to make my own set of painted butterfly jeans.
I’m all for bringing back fairycore vibes into our outfits, even in something as simple as a cute belt, chunky bracelets, and funky miniskirts. The tulle layers added to the jeans always make me jealous that I don’t have a pair myself.
There are so many different kinds of fashion inspiration that can be taken from any one of the movies and fashion lines that the Bratz have come out with. Watching the movies always makes me admire the different outfits that can be put together with just a little bit of creativity. Next time you feel like you’re lacking the creative juices, put on a Bratz movie. I’m sure one of them will have the style you’re looking for.
