The Best Romantic Movies You Can Find for the Single Girl on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Everyone loves a good rom-com, even the single ladies on V-Day. Here’s the breakdown of what to watch when you’re feeling the single slum.

For your cheesy fix

The Kissing Booth – This Netflix original is a coming-of-age movie that has just enough sap for the girl who loves a good cheesy movie even when she’s single. Starring Joey King, Joel Courtney and Jacob Elordi, The Kissing Booth tells the story of the dynamic between a young girl, her best friend, and her best friend’s brother; and how they navigate high school together in different social circles. It’s super cute, super sappy, and your go-to to replace your actual high school love with this one.

A Cinderella Story – This one is a classic. Starring Hillary Duff and Chad Michael Murray, it has everything from drama to female empowerment. It’s a modern twist on the classic Cinderella, and amidst all of the versions of this story, it’s my favorite, and in my opinion, the best. You can find this one on Netflix.

For when you need to sob

Silver Linings Playbook – Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence show their fantastic chemistry in this heart-wrenching film that tells of addiction, self-loathing, and learning to love. The story is heart-breaking, but it taught me to learn to love what and who I have and to be appreciative for the life I lead. Don’t be turned off by the endless “F-bombs,” it is definitely worth watching and is my go-to for when I need a good cry, and thankfully, it is on Netflix.

P.S. I Love You – I wanted to limit this list to just Netflix, but P.S. I Love You belongs on every V-Day list. Starring Hillary Swank, Gerard Butler, and several other big names in Hollywood, this masterpiece takes its audience through all the stages of grief, finding love and good old fashioned family drama. Plus, it features the beautiful Irish countryside and shows the journey of a young couple and a girl gang that brings their girlfriend back to life. I can’t give too much away, but this is my favorite movie (that isn’t Harry Potter,) and I 100% recommend it to anyone who needs to cry and believe in love again.

When you need a reminder that in-laws are rough

Monster in Law – Jennifer Lopez, Wanda Sykes, Jane Fonda and Michael Vartan remind us all that impressing the in-laws is a HUGE job. This movie basically brings to life the worst-case scenario of mother-in-law verses daughter-in-law beef and it helps those of us who are single feel a little bit better about not having to deal with this challenge just yet. It’s on Netflix, it’s super cute, and it’s definitely worth the watch. Plus, it’s predictable, so if you just want to watch the conflict, you can totally stop watching it before you reach the resolution!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding – This movie, starring Nia Vardalos and John Corbett, is a no-brainer. A strong Greek family must come to terms with the new non-Greek man marrying into their family. This is a super relatable story if you’re like me and you have a strong-willed, large family. It’s hilarious, it’s romantic and it’s even a little sad, so you’ve got the whole package! It is not on Netflix but it’s on Amazon Prime, which is discounted for students at FSU!
