It’s the addiction no one can shake, but the warm hug in the morning that nobody wants to lose. Coffee is a staple for college students. But don’t be fooled… your liquid energy doesn’t have to spew from a Keurig every day. Sometimes it’s nice to spend some time at your local coffee shop. Whether you need to study and get some work done, take some time for yourself, or catch up with a friend, these are my recommendations for Tallahassee coffee shops in no particular order.

There’s a reason that you see those goat stickers on every laptop and Hydro Flask on campus. Lucky Goat Coffee serves some of the best coffee in Tallahassee. Originally a wholesale coffee bean provider for cafés, Lucky Goat became well known and loved in the Tallahassee community. Now they have four locations in town, but if you’re looking for something close to campus, I’d go to the midtown location. While waiting in line, sample their coffee of the month and when you do order, be sure to get a pistachio muffin.

RedEye Coffee is committed to helping the environment and changing lives by only using ethically made coffee to brew their drinks. RedEye promises that the coffee beans they serve are grown by farmers that use environmentally friendly technology and are paid fairly. One of the gems of midtown, RedEye Coffee offers great tasting coffee and lots of seating– something that many Tallahassee coffee shops lack. This location is filled with natural light, which makes the shop a perfect place to study. If you stop by in December, make sure to try their seasonal Snickerdoodle Latte, which consists of cinnamon, brown sugar and vanilla.

Nestled in the corner of Lake Ella, Black Dog has an amazing view. You can sip on your beverage as you take in the scenery. There’s even patio seating that allows for a peaceful place to watch the water. Not only is the outside view lovely, but the inside is quaint and homey, similar to a log cabin. In terms of food and drink, Black Dog has many gluten-free and vegan options. I would recommend Black Dog as a place to catch up with a friend or to enjoy a nice day, as they turn off the Wi-Fi on the weekends in order to encourage being present in the moment.

Au Peche Mignon

Across the street from the Greyhound Bus Station lies Au Peche Mignon, a very underrated French pastry restaurant. Inside, they serve a large selection of macarons as well as many other pastries and a wide variety of hot and cold drinks. Out of all the coffee shops that I’ve mentioned, Au Peche Mignon has the most food; so if you’re looking to fill up your stomach, this is definitely the place for you. It also has the quietest atmosphere, making it my favorite study location. I always order a double vanilla latte or, on those days when I’m in the mood for something else, a white peach oolong iced tea.
