It’s no secret the Geminis have established a problematic reputation. Within the astrology community, they are called two-faced, compulsive liars that will switch up on you at any moment. While some element of this may be true, it’s mostly a dramatically negative misconception of a clever and witty sign. In all honestly, the dramatic nature of the Gemini understandably constitutes rather dramatic descriptions of them. As a Gemini myself, I feel compelled to explain, elaborate and provide valuable insight.

In your astrological natal chart, you have placements of all the planets in different zodiac signs and different houses. The placements of each planet and the house in which they fall play a significant guiding role in so many aspects of our lives. People with little knowledge of astrology usually think they are just one sign, their sun sign; however, with placements in multiple signs, going by just your sun sign does your personality and persona an injustice. If you have one sign with more placements than any other, then that’s the sign that is most genuinely you. For example, when I was born, the Sun, Mercury, Saturn and North Node were all in Gemini, making me a rather saturated Gemini whose traits and behaviors strongly reflect aspects of the sign. In other words, I didn’t choose the chaos. The chaos chose me. In an attempt to present the striking wonders of Geminis in a more pleasant light, here is the astrology of the Gemini based on planetary placements. But first, a quick little overview.

If you were born between May 21 and June 20, congratulations, you’re a Gemini! The sign is symbolized by the celestial twins, hence the two-faced stereotype. As Allure explains, “This air sign was interested in so many pursuits that it had to double itself.” Yes, each sign has an element; Gemini is the mutable air sign. Adjectives used to describe Geminis often include imaginative, perceptive, resourceful, savvy, versatile, eloquent, charming, clever, witty, inquisitive, adaptable, inventive and ingenious. Each sign has a planetary ruler; the Geminis are ruled by Mercury, the messenger planet of communication. Because of this, outward communication is highly valued and reflected by Geminis, especially the naturally social and extroverted ones. Each sign also has body parts that they are associated with; the Gemini rules the hands. Geminis are curious creatures that illuminate creative energy. We are always down for anything new; however, beware as we get bored easily and feel trapped when we cannot freely move from one idea to another. We are natural chameleons as we often shift our persona and energy to match those around us, but we quickly move on, consumed with the thoughts of what’s next.

There are 14 basic placements demonstrated in a natal chart: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Chiron, North Node, Ascendant and Midheaven. Each placement affects you differently. For the sake of the length of this article, I will only go over the inner planetary placements and the ascendant sign as they have the strongest impact on who you are. The inner placements—Mercury, Venus, Mars and the Moon—orbit the sun much quicker than the outer placements, and as a result, their position in the zodiacs at the time and location you were born is truer to you. The outer planets take years, decades or centuries to orbit the earth and change zodiac positions; thus, entire generations can share the same placements of these planets.

Sun in Gemini

Your sun sign represents your core essence, will and purpose, your sense of vitality, your individuality and your sense of self. It describes the center of your personality, what motivates you and who you are learning to become. Many call the sun sign your ‘ego-self.’ With your sun in Gemini, communication is key. You are in tune with logical thought processes based on duality and the conscious mind. You are airy, intellectual and curious. You can easily experience two sides of something at the same time. You move around like a butterfly aiming to gain knowledge through great conversations and a good sense of humor. In relationships, you value independence. You can be mischievous and flighty when bored, but your intellectual and artistic possibilities are endless.

Moon in Gemini

Your moon sign represents your ‘emotional-self.’ It describes your instinctive or emotional energies and the things you need for comfort and security. While your sun sign describes who you are becoming, your moon sign describes who you already are. You have a quick and adaptable mind. You are interested in whatever is happening around you with an ever-present urge to be in the know. You need variety and continuous change; multiple experiences and projects keep you going. You feel emotional balance when you’re connected to your environment and the people in your life. The idea of sharing interesting information with someone you are connected with excites you immensely.

Ascendant in Gemini

Your ascendant or rising sign is your external persona. It describes how you project yourself, how others perceive you and what you need to make your life meaningful. This placement also describes how you respond to your environment. Your ascendant is determined by what astrological sign is ascending on the eastern horizon at the exact time and location of your birth. As a Gemini rising, you are versatile and engaging with a young heart. You approach life with a natural curiosity, sense of inquisitiveness and desire to understand how everything works. You can easily fit in with whatever life brings you with acute social awareness. With many interests, you have many gifts, usually of charm and wit. You are continuously learning. Success comes from honoring your many interests and skills.

Mercury in Gemini

You seem to know a little bit about everything. Your eclectic interests leave you quick-witted but scattered. A drawback to having so many varying interests means you generally have a harder time diving deeper into one thing. You are a fast learner, quickly picking up information from your environment and processing it even quicker. Your nervous energy is restless and characteristic of this placement. You are open-minded but sometimes use too much logic in decision-making and not enough emotion or heart. You aren’t the most personal communicator. You are changeable and cool as a result of your detachment from issues, opinions and ideas. Your versatility can be hard for others to keep up with. With a great sense of humor, you are a smooth and engaging speaker who can easily attract the attention of a room. This is where the deception, without ill intent, of course, comes into play.

Venus in Gemini

Venus is the planet of love and relationships. Therefore, your Venus sign represents how you go about those aspects of life. If you’re Venus is in Gemini, you are playful and hard to pin down. You will try to win over your object of affection with wit and demonstration of how much you know. In love, you are fickle and hesitant to commit. If you are in love with a Gemini Venus, you never know what to expect from day to day. You are pleased through fun and variety. Space for friends and activities outside your relationship is important to you. Spending quality time with a Gemini Venus can be exciting and invigorating, but you can’t get too frustrated with their fickleness and detachment. Curiosity moves Geminis in all placements, especially in romance and relationships.

Mars in Gemini

Mars is the planet of action, drive and passion. The Mars placement is often used to describe your sexuality. With Mars in Gemini, you are scattered and unfocused. You are easily bored and need frequent change to keep things fresh and your energy levels high. You disdain routine as a naturally busy person. Boredom affects you physically; you’re exhausted when not occupied within something but a powerhouse when you are. Because of your passion for words, when angry or triggered, you use your words as your weapon. Your angry words are usually incisive and sarcastic; once you start talking, you won’t stop until you get everything off your chest. Debates are your specialty, winning arguments with your wit. You are the chattiest when worked up. You often channel your energy through your hands as Gemini rules the hands; puzzles and games are great distractions for your scattered mind. Be careful not to spread yourself too thin as sustained interest is unlikely with this placement.

Wow, that’s a whole lot of Gemini to take in! We may be hard to keep up with, but we are amazing people to be friends (and lovers) with. I guarantee that if you are with a Gemini in their truest form, you will never be bored or disinterested. Astrology is such a vast topic; it’s an umbrella for endless connections and identities. Outside of the signs, it includes houses, aspects, degrees, elements, qualities and so much more that I would never have enough time to talk about. Our lives are quite literally mapped out in the stars. Hopefully, what you learned about the Gemini sign lightens any misconceptions or judgments you may have had. We may be a little two-faced, but it’s all in our natural skills of adaptability and variability combined with urges to never be bored. If you’ve been left in the dust of the Gemini, it’s best not to take it personally.

Hey everyone! I'm a senior at FSU majoring in Editing, Writing and Media. I was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, FL (the 954). You'd most likely catch me eating a bowl of cereal, listening to Kid Cudi and lighting an incense (yes, all at once).
