Ariana Grande Changed the Lyrics to “thank u, next” at the Grammys

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

“One day I’ll walk down the aisle / Holding hands with my mama / I’ll be thanking my dad / ‘Cause she grew from the drama”

We have all sung along with Ariana Grande to her smash song “thank u, next” during long car rides or messy nights out with friends, so when she performed at the Grammys on Sunday, you may have noticed a little switch up in the lyrics.

Sunday night she sang “I’ll be thanking my dad / ‘Cause he’s really awesome” in replace of the drama line. Fans noticed her choking back tears as she smiled while singing her edited version of the song.

Earlier in the night while walking the red carpet, she had both of her parents, mother Joan Grande and father Edward Butera, by her side. They both looked happy to be there in support of Ari and exchanged kisses on the cheeks with their daughter.

She looked stunning in an extravagant grey tulle gown by Giambattista Valli and matching grey silk gloves. Obviously, the look wouldn’t be complete without her signature up-do, however, this ponytail had an elegant twist. Paparazzi were blown away when last-minute modifications were made to the dress in front of their eyes – they actually took scissors to the tule of the gown to snip a few inches off.

But, back to the “drama,” or what looks to be a happy ending to it all.

In an interview with Seventeen from 2014, Ari answered with the following when asked what the toughest thing she has had to deal with was;

“Falling out of touch with my dad. It’s private, but it happened last year. It took me so long to be okay with it. The thing that got me there was embracing the fact that that I am made up of half my dad, and a lot of my traits come from him. So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn’t like that about myself. I had to accept that it’s okay not to get along with somebody and still love them.”

She has not said much more about the subject of her falling out with her father. It is largely speculated that the situation had something to do with the divorce of her parents.

Things started looking on the upside when Ari posted a selfie on Instagram this past Thanksgiving featuring both of her parents squeezed into the frame. The caption read “First Thanksgiving with both of my parents in 18 years!”

One thing is for sure – Ariana Grande’s fans absolutely loved the sweet moments she shared with her family on the carpet and on stage. They took to Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms to show their love and support for her. Twitter user @haudenoshawty tweeted out the following:

And even though Ariana did not win album of the year, she was the star of the show. From her jaw-dropping dress and her amazing performance to her touching reconnection with her family, this will be a Grammy’s night she will never forget.
