All the Super Bowl News You Need to Know… Besides Football

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

If you’re anything like me, you may enjoy the hype surrounding the football and often partake in sitting through the game with friends and family, but you’re not really a football fan. Good news, I’m here to tell you all about what other entertainment will be available to you throughout Super Bowl 54, including the special commercials that will play, what the halftime show consists of and, of course, the puppy bowl.

Commercials are integral in the structure of the Super Bowl. Companies spend multitudes more money than almost any other day of the year to have commercials play throughout the game, so they have to be memorable. From what we can see so far, it doesn’t look like they plan on disappointing.

First, we have the Hyundai 2020 Sonata with smaht pahk. According to Digital Trends, the commercial features celebrities John Krasinski, Chris Evans, Rachel Dratch and David Ortiz. They are all playing characters with overly prominent Boston accents and make discussing the new Hyundai Sonata’s Remote Smart Parking Assist very amusing. You can watch it here

On the other end of the spectrum, Digital Trends shows Budweiser’s new commercial which is sentimental and void of celebrities. It plays with the idea of the “typical American” and shows American heroes and inspirations to instill American pride and an emotional response, saying typical Americans drink Budweiser, a typical American Beer. Watch it here

A final commercial that might be worth watching is Microsoft’s Be the One ad. It is narrated by Katie Bowers, an assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers, who is currently making history by being the first woman to coach in a Super Bowl. It tells her background, how she came to be a coach, and how she uses a Microsoft Surface Pro to help her in her work. You can watch it here

Next, the halftime show. Super Bowl 54 is in Miami this year, and as said by Sporting News, they picked two Hispanic pop-icons perfect for the location. Both Shakira and Jennifer Lopez will be performing the halftime show, neither who have performed during it before. According to Sporting News, the show will likely start around 8 pm, 90 minutes after the game itself starts at 6:30 pm.

In other performance news, Demi Lovato will also be singing the National Anthem at kick-off at 6:30, so be sure to tune in for that as well if you’re a fan.

Finally, we have Puppy Bowl XVI. Although not on the same channel as the Super Bowl, it’s still worth mentioning. It starts at 3 pm on Animal Planet, so if you want to start your Super Bowl Party early, here’s a good reason to. According to Bleacher Report, the event will feature 96 adoptable puppies from 61 shelters all competing for the “Lombarky Trophy,” presented by Chewy.com, and the puppy with the most touchdowns will receive the Milk-Bone Most Valuable Puppy Award. This event will be taking place at the GEICO stadium, and if you’d like to see all of the furry contestants, you can look here
